Sierra Nevada Corporation Dream Chaser Update

Post #1522by Endeavor35 » 31.05.2021, 04:11

Update to my very first addon for Celestia, Sierra Nevada Corporation's Dream Chaser Spaceplane.

This update is in effect a quality of life update to the initial version, which I originally released back in early January. As such, make sure that you delete your old version of Dream Chaser from your Celestia install, before copying over the new one.

This update include the following changes:

- Centerline window seam that was visible in the original model has now been fully fixed.

- UV map has been altered slightly to improve the overall look.

- Normal and emissive map textures have now been added to the model to increase its detail.

- Over brightness has now been corrected, and no longer should cause the spacecraft to appear waaay too bright when in broad daylight.

- Orbit data has been changes so as to make the spacecraft now follow the ISS, in a similar fashion to my other spacecraft addons.

- Shiny/glossiness that was an unusual hallmark of the original addon has now been done away with. Dream Chases is shiny, but not that shiny! lol.

- Other minor tweaks and small improvements to the overall addon.

Note: Dream Chaser is now also available on Celestia Mobile for iOS & Android!

Enjoy!

Endeavor35 ... Normal map is not working properly for this type of material in your model... Use just two textures, and you will see this... I revised your .cmod file and left only two textures... now your model looks more realistic...

Project Apollo (Part 3)

Post #1524by DaveBowman2001 » 04.06.2021, 03:21

The entirety of the Apollo program has now been simulated on Celestia! Note that all models and textures included, except for the Lunar Roving Vehicle, LEM-1, and the ALSEP instruments, are made by many add-on contributors of the past, and thus I dedicate this addon to them (full list on the ReadMe.txt).

WHAT'S NEW?:

- Added seven missions; Apollo 6, 10, 12, 14-17.
- Added the Lunar Roving Vehicle for Apollo 15-17
- Added LEM-1, the spacecraft used in Apollo 5
- Added six ALSEP instruments (provided by Endeavor35!)
- The lunar orbits of Apollo 8, 10-12, 14-17 are updated to allow the crossing of the landing sites (values generated using Orbiter 2016)
- The EVAs and the repair of Skylab are now simulated
- The orbit of Skylab now follows the TLE data provided by revent on this thread (recovered by pedro_jg!)
- The heliocentric orbits of all surviving S-IVB stages of Apollo 8 to 12, based on HORIZONS data
- Earlier (beta) versions from three years ago, Part 1 and Part 2, are now obsolete

HOW TO NAVIGATE?:

- The Apollo LEMs on the surface have spaces before their names to distinguish them from the CSMs (example: " Apollo 17")
- To visit Surveyor 3, download first the Surveyor Landers addon
- You can still visit the hardware left on the surface in the present day, albeit the Descent Stages are now classified as "component" rather than "spacecraft". The same also goes for the S-IVBs and the Snoopy LEM-AS now orbiting the sun

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:

- The flight of Apollo 13 (as of today, no HORIZONS/SPICE data has been found to accurately render it on Celestia).
- The orbit of Apollo 9's Spider LEM-AS up until 1981
- Simple orbits depicting the descent of the seven LEMs (including Snoopy) on the surface of the Moon
- Lastly, the creation of the actual terrain of the landing sites themselves for historical accuracy

It's the entire addon. Why would it be split up into multiple parts? I'm aware that the name has "Part 3" in it, but if you read the post you'd see that:

The entire satellite fleet of Intelsat, Morelos, PanAmSat (PAS), and Solidaridad

This is Part Nine of the 2021 update for Thomas Guilpain's Geostationary Earth Satellites addon (both 2002 and 2012 versions). All credit goes to him

All satellites from PanAmSat, Solidaridad, and the later generations of Intelsat are rendered as "satellite.3ds", while Morelos and the first four generations of Intelsat are rendered as "satgeneric.3ds". In this batch, only the satellites owned by Intelsat and PanAmSat remain operational to this day

"Lucy" spacecraft.... model and planned trajectory... edited asteroids.ssc ( added timeline for asteroids: 52246 Donaldjohanson, 3548 Eurybates, 15094 Polymele, 11351 Leucus, 21900 Orus, 617 Patroclus )... and created XYXV files for sampled trajectories for these asteroids by data from HORIZONS... so it's need to replace asteroids.ssc file and add XYZV files to DATA folder...

Luna 10

Post #1534by DaveBowman2001 » 07.06.2021, 05:26

Luna 10 is the 23rd space probe launched as part of the Soviet Luna programme, and only the 4th one to successfully achieve its objectives (not including Luna 1). It is launched on 1966-Mar-31, and reached lunar orbit three days later on April 3rd, becoming the first spacecraft ever to orbit a celestial object other than Earth. It operated on its non-rechargeable chemical batteries until May 30th, completing 460 orbits before losing contact with Earth.

This addon only depicts the Ye-6S main payload jettisoned by its propulsion module shortly after reaching orbit. It is unknown if it is still in lunar orbit or when it crashed onto the surface, however in this mod we will leave it there silently circling the Moon on the present day.

NOTE (221201): This addon is now obsolete. Download the latest version here

Venera Landers (9-14)

Post #1536by DaveBowman2001 » 09.06.2021, 13:31

The landers of Venera 9 to 14 were the first spacecraft to image the surface of another planet (successfully) in history, beating NASA's twin Viking landers by a full year, and excluding the partial image sent by the Soviet Mars 3 in 1971.

The series is the third major redesign after gaining experience from the endurance of atmospheric probes (3-6) and early landers (7-8), to allow longer operations. Even so, the landers were only able to operate on the surface for a maximum of 2 hours (achieved by Venera 13) before succumbing to the intense heat and pressure.

There are six landers of this design sent to Venus via orbiters (9-10), and flyby buses (11-14), all were successful. Later, the design would be incorporated for the landers of the twin Vega missions in 1985.

In Celestia, the landers have a space before their names to differentiate them with the orbiters/flyby buses that sent them (not included in the pack, see Venera 2-11, 13-14, 16 by Jack Higgins)

"Lunar Prospector" is my new model for Celestia...

"Lunar Prospector was the third mission selected by NASA for full development and construction as part of the Discovery Program. At a cost of $62.8 million, the 19-month mission was designed for a low polar orbit investigation of the Moon, including mapping of surface composition including polar ice deposits, measurements of magnetic and gravity fields, and study of lunar outgassing events. The mission ended July 31, 1999, when the orbiter was deliberately crashed into a crater near the lunar south pole, after the presence of water ice was successfully detected.

Data from the mission allowed the construction of a detailed map of the surface composition of the Moon, and helped to improve understanding of the origin, evolution, current state, and resources of the Moon. Several articles on the scientific results were published in the journal Science.

Luna 19 and 22

Post #1539by DaveBowman2001 » 12.06.2021, 08:05

Luna 19 and 22 were the 38th and 40th space probes launched as part of the Soviet Luna programme, and the 11th and 13th successful missions respectively. They were the two Ye-8LS orbiters derived from the same design as Lunokhod 1/2 and Luna 17/21, weighing 5.7 tons at launch. Their mission is to map the lunar surface and study the lunar environment, ranging from its gravitational fields to cosmic rays.

Luna 19 was launched in 28 Sept 1971 and reached low lunar orbit five days later, completing 4,315 orbits before shutting down 14 months later on 1 Nov 1972. Its derelict remains was presumed to stay in orbit for a year before crashing down at an unknown location.

Luna 22 was launched in 29 May 1974 and reached low lunar orbit four days later, completing 3,875 orbits before shutting down sometime in early Nov 1975. Like its predecessor, its derelict remains presumably remained in orbit for a year before crashing down somewhere on the Moon. As of 2021, Luna 22 is the last spacecraft sent by the Soviet Union/Russia to solely orbit the Moon

Requires linuxman's Lunokhod-1/Luna-17 addon from this site to load the textures. An SSC update to Luna 17/21 is also included
