The first version of Celestia

Post #1by SpaceFanatic64 » 28.10.2018, 19:25

While browsing through the Wayback Machine, I found an archive of what appears to be the very first version of Celestia. I will attach the zip archive if anyone wants to try it out yourself. You might be surprised to see how different Celestia was in 2001 than it is today!

I haven't downloaded it, but I know it will be very different...

It's vastly different between 2001 and 2002.

Yup. In fact, when I first tried it out, I had no idea how to navigate since right-click dragging didn't work!

Added after 3 minutes 51 seconds:
Also an interesting fact, the texture files date back to 1999 and 2001. This could mean that development likely started in 1999 or the textures were just old.

And it has Windows 2000 support, something 1.2.4 doesn’t have.

How did you get it on Windows 2000? If it's a virtual machine, how did you transfer the files?

Something I noticed is that in solarsys.ssc, there's a commented out entry for the USS Enterprise. I also noticed that everything was included in that file before they branched off to their own files. Also, stars used to be included in .ssc files before being defined in .stc files.

I did not notice that when looked through solarsys.ssc, all I noticed was that it was not like its version from 1.2.4 and onwards.

Added after 2 days 20 hours:
And versions 1.2.4 through 1.6.0 work on Windows 2000 amd XP.

Added after 46 seconds:
Continuation.
