Populating WLM (and other galaxies) with REAL stars

Post #41by SpaceFanatic64 » 07.09.2018, 23:09

Oh. Well, in that case, try doing another version of your binary star catalog. The star Agena is missing the Agena B companion. Here are the ones I think you could try implementing: Rigel, Spica, and Antares.
If you see that I made a dumb or nonsensical post years ago, please forgive me in advance.

This add-on almost 1700 stars in the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Carina dSph).

AppMag 29.9 # typical magnitude: was temporarily 28.4 during lensing event
   SpectralType "B"
   Distance 1.44e+10 # comoving distance
}

However, the star won't display because Celestia doesn't show stars that are over 10 million light years away. (See this thread for details.)

Is it possible to increase further the allowable distance for stars to exist in Celestia's Universe to around the mega-parsec range in Celestia 1.7.0? Or at least make a feature that enables stars in galaxies based on the user's current distance (Preferably around 10-100 million light-years) and disables stars beyond the range of the user until the user comes closer to the disabled stars, thus enabling them for the user to see?

I think it is, but as discussed in this thread, it'll be hard to add more than a single star to a extremely distant galaxy, because the stars need lots of decimal digits of precision.

That I don't know, since I'm not a developer. You'll have to ask onetwothree for that.

Not with the current code.

Oh. But if I remember, Art Blos, with the help of Selden is doing something kinda like that: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18638

Added after 5 minutes 22 seconds:
While it still basic and not complex enough, those are just baby steps, and I'm sure that eventually such a code could allow stars and even galaxies to appear and disappear depending on the user's location, saving some space that would be wasted by generating objects too far away. And perhaps if you want, there could be an option to modify how far would the user like to see objects, from a minimum of 10 million light years to anywhere in the mega parsecs level

Selden gave a good explanation in that thread why the same approach can't be used with stars and DSOs.

I may not have understood some of that but at least I got the gist of what he was saying. Actually, I'm thankful that people like you and Selden are keeping Celestia alive and kicking despite having lots of competitors like SpaceEngine, SkySafari, Stellarium, etc. So I say to you. keep up the good work!

Sorry, I've been quite busy in general and these STC files do take some time, so no, not right now. I suppose the next to do are Leo I, Leo II, and Leo A...

Oh I can't wait! Also, since you added the Martian Rovers, are their places gonna be marked in the "Locations" file?

Why designate them locations? It is enough turn on the names of the spacecraft and everything will be visible.

Ahhh. It was just because they are now on the ground and thus, not considered spacecraft. But you're the boss.

Hi Kilo_SSK, you should ask toutatis for that. He's our resident expert on making spacecraft add-ons.

Great, thanks! The thread's already packed full of info, I'll read it through and through and see how many questions I still have afterwards?
