Portable version anywhere ?

Post #1by MalcolmP » 16.08.2016, 14:59

Hi all,
It has been a long time ! :) and I see that the current version on Sourcforge is still 1.6.1 which I think I have on an old computal in my attic !
I would like to get back up to speed with Celestia on this my every-day machine, - so, a bit of a long-shot, has anyone made a portable version to run off a USBstick/drive ? Anywhere ??

Thanks,
Malcolm.

Hi.
You can find it here, but I decline every responsibility because I never tried it  :

Goofy, download. Any errors and viruses in this version is not detected. All flies. In addition, this version of Celestia, unlike the standard is no different and has the same properties. Thank you and the developers of this version of Celestia  !

It is also still downloadable at PortableApps.com:

When I want to run Celestia from an external USB drive (or USB stick for that matter), I simply copy the entire Celestia folder onto the drive, create a new shortcut pointing to that location (or copy and modify "Target and "Start In:" properties of an existing shortcut), and then edit the celestia.cfg file on that drive, changing any file references from "C:/..." to "F:/..." for example (for whatever drive-letter the drive mounts as on a given machine).

I don't know what these so called "portable" apps do differently to this, but my method works in WINDOWS ... Linux and OS-X users, YMMV.

Good Morning All,

@Chuft-Captain Excellent ! Thanks ! I never thought of that :) doh !! and as it happens I am currently looking in one of my old USB drives for some other archived stuff and guess what - on it there is copy of a Celestia 1.3.2 folder from 2004 :) works perfectly, didnt even have to rename any of the stuff in the cfg. Gosh, the nostalgia ! the hours I spent making stuff for it :) !
So now all I have to do is find a 1.6.1 in my archives, or download the PortableApps one

@Goofy, @SVision @Adirondack thanks guys, looks like that IT version is the same as the portable apps one, according to its 'i' write up it points to the same sourceforge as does the portable.app

Thanks for all your suggestions,
Malcolm.
