Vista updates question

I'm posting this here because it has nothing to do with Celestia, with the exception of trying to avoid uninstalling it.

Anyways, my laptop is an old 2008 HP with only 137 gb of HDD space. Naturally, I'm running outta space, and I'm wondering, how do I figure out what Windows Vista updates currently installed I do and don't really actually need?

(32-bit Windows, btw, if it helps.)

I'm already using an external HDD by usb. Also, my Vista is home premium, rather than Vista Basic.

Plus, this laptop never shipped with a cd, and it was a deliberate move by the makers of this laptop.

I also am stuck with Vista Home Premium on my current PC, and the latest Windows updates -
security and others - are simply atrocious.

My PC is now adding items to my start menu whether I want them there or not, and I'm very
seriously thinking that it's time for a whole new PC. One without Vista.

Actually, I haven't installed new updates in a while, because I have it set to notify me for approval first, so I can save space on the HDD.

You are young, energetic and always ready for a challenge, right?

So why do you still mess around with Vista, the worst OS by MS of all times?? My suggestion would be to clean your HDD from it entirely and switch to a good Linux distribution instead (OpenSuse, Ubuntu,...) . It may take some getting used to, but I promise after a little while you don't want to miss it anymore. Notably for older machines, Linux runs a lot faster than any OS from MS. Linux is rock stable and far more versatile once you have learned how to use it.

Since decades I develop code in parallel on Linux and Windows. So I can really tell the difference...and I always prefer to work with Linux. Same with JVV or Andrew (aka ajtribick) ...for example...

He's referring to the fact that linux is a command line OS, and command line generally IS difficult to learn, steep learning curve, etc.

That said, I'm a windows "fanboy"*, through and through. So no disrespect, but no linux for me, since I dislike command line anyway. So any OS change for me will likely be to Windows 7, if possible. I know 8 is almost as bad as Vista, so I'm avoiding that like the plague.

(* = Definitely *NOT* an M$ fanboy -- there's a difference between fanboying over an OS and fanboying over an entire corporation. )

I thought you are sometimes a little short with money. Unlike Windows, Linux is always FREE. Moreover, since > 10 years Linux comes by default with a most convenient graphical Desktop (KDE4 or GNOME) that leaves NOTHING to be desired!. These alternative desktops are MUCH more convenient, flexible and clever than MS Desktops. If you don't want, you NEVER will see a command line! You are simply not well informed as it seems.

...And never forget: learning keeps people alert

It gives kind of a strange impression if healthy people complain that BOTH commercial software costs money AND that free software requires some learning. With using Linux you can replace a completely outdated and slow commercial OS by the best OS (Linux) that in addition is FREE.

I uninstalled MS office a long time ago, so I could use OpenOffice instead.
