Using a faster disk (e.g. using an SSD) will help Celestia start faster and Addons load faster.
Hi Selden.
I think it's all true, but with one very important exception (at least for my needs): using VT textures.
I see that when I move close and far many times over e.g. the 64k Fridger's Earth, the speed is not so smart and I have some speed scaling when approaching to higher levels, even if I have a not so bad graphic card, a good SATA2 7200 rpm HD and 8GB DDR2 RAM.
I think that the very high speed of SSD could help a lot with VTs.
Am I wrong?
Thank you.
Bye

As long as the Celestia's swap file is built faster, once all memory resources are ended...

Indeed, loading VTs does a lot of disk I/O until they've all been loaded. Celestia has "prload texture" CEL and CELX commands, but they only work for textures which consist of a single image file, not for VTs. A high-performance SSD can help a lot when you view a planet which has high resolution VT surface and cloud textures. (Note that VTs can only be used for spherical objects, not for 3DS or CMOD models.)

Update ...
1. Graphics: Intel 4000 integrated
2. RAM: 8 GB
3. Processor: i7-3770K, Speed: 3.7 Ghz
4. Resolution: 1920 x 1080
5. Disk: Intel SSD 120GB, SATA 6
6. Win 7 Pro
7. Anti-aliasing: ON, (Application control)

LEXX = 75 fps - 85 fps

One issue I have noticed however, is that all the colors of the model disappeared when I viewed in Open-GL 2.0:
lexx - openGL 2.jpg

Other render paths are OK:
lexx - openGL vertex.jpg

This may be a driver issue, ie. the Intel 4000 chipset is very new, so default drivers not very mature, but I wonder if anyone else has the same issue with this model in OGL2? ... in which case it may be a Celestia issue.

It's a bug in the SSC provided in the Addon.

I don't have a copy readily available right now, but as I recall, it spacifies an empty surface texture file name.

Thanks Selden,

Commenting out both Texture and NightTexture directives resolved this issue. :)

ps. I don't know how you manage to remember such tiny details about so many addons. (You must have the memory of an Elephant!)

I wish!

The LEXX addon is the one that I looked at most recently, which shows just how little I've actually been doing with Celestia lately. :(

I also tried to watch LEXX on DVD recently. I'd forgotten how bad it was.

I need to make a correction.
I discovered that in my earlier tests, although I had enabled anti-aliasing option in the menu, I had not done so in celestia.cfg. Without doing both, I don't believe that Celestia does any ant-aliasing. So my earlier post should have read as:
----------------------------
1. Graphics: Intel 4000 integrated
2. RAM: 8 GB
3. Processor: i7-3770K, Speed: 3.7 Ghz
4. Resolution: 1920 x 1080
5. Disk: Intel SSD 120GB, SATA 6
6. Win 7 Pro
7. Anti-aliasing: OFF

LEXX = 75 fps - 85 fps
---------------------------

I have recently discovered that setting AntialiasingSamples to any value greater than 1 totally cripples my FPS and causes other artifacts!
(eg. LEXX = 0.5 fps - 4 fps )

I'll comment about this in another thread: http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16932
