Here's what I entered...

Code: Select all

stargen.exe -s# -m1.35 -i# -t >pazhan.ssc

I could never seem to get the -c command to work. What might I be doing wrong? (I'm assuming it's a problem on my end.)
Thanks.

You are seeing exactly what you should see for the output of the -t command.
If you replace -t by -c, the output file should contain .SSC directives instead.

Did you build StarGen yourself or are you using a binary downloaded from the Web?

(I've been making some changes to my own copy of StarGen to enhance the .SSC output, but using my version would either require Cygwin under Windows or that you build StarGen from scratch in some other way.)

p.s. the #'s in your stargen command should be replaced by actual numbers.

p.p.s. The most recent version of StarGen sourcecode available from Brons is v1.47. You're using an older version (v1.34). That might be part of the problem.

ME? Build StarGen myself?!?!?!

(sometimes my own laughter is insufficient.)

In all seriousness, I don't have the skills for that sort of thing...(my true skills are with the green and the growing. )

I couldn't remember what my seed number was (hence the #).

I'll look into using the most recent version...maybe that will change things.

I had tried replacing -t with -c, but ended up with an empty .ssc...most curious.

Thanks for your help.

Building StarGen is relatively easy (cd to the folder containing stargen, then type the command "make"), but you have to install Cygwin first, including its gcc4 components. Supposedly it can be compiled with Visual Studio, but I haven't tried that yet; maybe this evening.

It could be that the Windows binary provided on JimB's Web site is the older version. Unfortunately, the last time I communicated with him about StarGen, he indicated that his interests are elsewhere these days.

My preferred method of system creation is using a tweaked version of Rassilon's browser-based SSC generator (I did the tweaking myself). For stars similar to our sun, I click the "random" button. For significantly different suns and for moons, I have AstroSynthesis generate data, copy/paste the data into the fields on the SSC generator, and have it output the data in SSC format.

Once in a while, I may just type the SSC and STC by hand.

When it comes to textures, I simply use the textures from the texture packs provided with the Globular Cluster Generator. I have very little texture creation skills, and I'm lazy.

I E-mailed Guckytos the latest version of the SSC generator tweaks so he could host it on his site, but haven't heard back. I also sent a forum PM to Rassilon a long time ago, but never heard back.

I was recently directed to this method of texture creation (courtesy of Selden's list of links)...
http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp?SID=750E519C10986BC514EE4E8634A54E782BF

it contains a tutorial for making earthlike and other planetary textures. It takes some time w/ GIMP or PhotoShop, but here's what I came up with recently (after some trial and error..although it was more error than trial  )

Of course, there is still some work to be done to this, like seams and pinch effect, but you get the idea.
