Commendable efforts! Weird, though, that this cannot be done quantitatively and automatically. Weirder, even, that the released images have different intensities.

Why don't you write to the responsible lead scientist and ask what's going on. Another option would be to inquire with 'emazarico' from the LRO-LOLA group.
That's what I would do before spending my time on this texture...

PS: I suppose you took into account that the projection of the published polar imaging data is different from that of the central portion. Could it be that your ISIS3 reprojection of the polar strips into 'simple cylindrical' format was done incorrectly?

John, I have downloaded your Moon 3.0 from Motherlode (64k, L6, based on the LRO-WAC). It's beautiful, the details are incredible, and its seamless.
There is something that I wanted to share, to see if you have seen the same. I find this texture it a little too "shaded". Do you find it so? The illumination is not close to local noon, but morning in parts of the surface, and afternoon in others. As such, the full moon looks weird. In my opinion your old 32k Clementine surface (the one you remapped to match with JAXA normals) looks more natural from a distance.
I will upload some examples if necesary, but perhaps there is no need and everybody has seen the same.
It's a pity that the LRO didn't release a shadowless texture.
