the images about the quake in Japan that you copied from somewhere are very impressive. But for sure they are under copyright! So you and|or this forum might well encounter problems without inclusion of proper references... Moreover it is a matter of fairness to quote the origins/photographer/...

This pictures what you see, you can find everywhere in Internet (Google and search Japan tsunami) on different pages, even on polish forum where i saw this pictures first time. So i m not expected any problems after show this pictures here.

Of course you find these pictures via Google in a number of sites, which is however independent of the copyright that regulates the corresponding legal restrictions! Showing copyrighted images without the original link can be illegal. In such case at least the owner of this forum will be liable...

Selden? Chris?

I also don't understand why you are not willing to quote the original sources for these pictures? Too much work for you? Presumably, the respective photographers spent a LOT more time before they were able to shoot such good photos...

You fight with windmills. So whole Internet is illegal, because u can find this photos everywhere without any word about author/s and copyrights. I can't find any information too. As i say, i m not expected any problems after show this pictures here.

Do you understand that this is almost impossible to find original authors, original sources of this pictures and their copyrights in Internet? If you want, try ,good luck . If you find, tell me, send original link i will paste that link here and make you happy.

People...

EDIT: Looks like that Steffens lucky found source of this pictures, and paste link here. Fridger are you happy now :?:

It's up to the shatters.net site administrators to act eventually.

Personally, I don't care if Selden / Chris find a display of copyrighted images without references OK. They may eventually get into trouble not me. But certainly, I would not allow such behaviour at CelestialMatters, where I have the saying. For legal reasons and for reasons of fairness towards the creators of the material that was copied here without giving credit.

As a small reminder: whenever you google for images, you are warned on the right hand side that the image you selected may be under Copyright. The legal restrictions of copyrighted material may vary a lot!

Here is an example of an image display from the quake in Japan that illustrates how things have to be done correctly!
http://www.sacbee.com/2011/03/14/347486 ... day-4.html

For each photo, you find the reference to the photographer and agency in the bottom line on the right,.

We all know that the Internet itself is neither good nor bad. It's the people who tend to make it bad through illegal action, e.g. by copying/distributing child pornography or copyrighted commercial films, videos, music or cracked software. All these activities are done by many without asking questions...

@Milosz21: Of course such habits do NOT become less illegal if done by MANY ;-)

For public forums like shatters.net or CelestialMatters the law clearly states that it is the operators who will be legally liable!

That's definitely all I have to say here. Selden is welcome to erase whatever I wrote in this context.
Sorry, if I polluted this thread...

The images are not hosted on shatters.
I've edited the post so the images are not displayed, but are still available if someone wants to look at them.

So i and nobody are not allowed to show somebody work because this work may be under copyright? If everyone will so care about that like you, Internet will be very bored place.
What you think, how some works, images, films start to be popular in net? Because people discuss about that and show each other this works images. Think about that. I'm pretty sure that somebody steal something from my ad-dons and say that he do this stuff. I don't care about that because i can't stop that process. Many people (assholes) do that, and if you think that your post will scare everyone, u are wrong.

I will do same if i found authors, i will pasted images and links. But because i cannot found i pasted same images, because they are very impressive and deserve to show. If you ask me, personally i care about copyrights.

Hosted on site, similar to ImageShack. I don't see difference between show images on forum, and links.

Nobody trusting the running water in parts of japan because it has contamination. :(

Reiko,

we have not heard this in our media who report quite openly (as compared to most Japanese ones, as is said). A significant contamination of the running water could indicate that the core melting in block 2 has reached the ground water level already. If the water contamination is only very mild there may be much less severe explanations, however.

Our media emphasize since today, that the Japanese people in Tokyo are now getting VERY nervous.
I am really sorry that this "triple" horror could not be avoided...

Fridger

EDIT: Unfortunately, it was meanwhile also reported by our media that running tap water should be avoided in the region around Fukushima I.

I read an article yesterday about the earthquake which devastated our city on Feb 22, which states:

"In fact while the magnitude rating of the February 22 Christchurch earthquake wasn't extremely high, the force, or energy, that came from it was simply incredible - scientists say it may have been one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded ... on the entire planet.
The ground acceleration from this earthquake was two times the speed of gravity, whereas the earthquake last September was the same as gravity. This is a phenomenal statistic and partially explains why so [many] buildings collapsed.
"

This scientist on Youtube: The energy of the Christchurch earthquake and the slapdown effect
does quite a good job of explaining the difference between MAGNITUDE and SEISMIC ENERGY, and also goes on to explain how some of the processes such as liquefaction were caused, and why the effects were so bad...

I've done my own (very rough, seat of the pants) calculation of the total energy released on the region since this event kicked off with the 7.1 in Sept 2010.

The quoted energy released by the Sep 4 2010 7.1 magnitude quake was equivalent to exploding 671,000 tonnes of TNT.
Based on this, I've estimated...
Total from the Feb 23 2011 event onwards: 205,000 tonnes
Total from the Jun 13 2011 event onwards: 120,000 tonnes
Total from Dec 23 2011 event onwards: 34,000 tonnes

The grand total since this whole thing began: 905,000 tonnes.
(i.e. Almost the equivalent of a million tonnes of TNT has been unleashed on our city/region since Sept 2010)

Note: If this scientist is correct, then my estimates will be considerably underestimated, as he was claiming that the 7.1 in 2010 released more like the energy of a 7.4, and that the 6.3 on Feb 22 released the seismic energy normally expected from a 6.7 mag.
His conclusions would push the total well over 2 megatonnes.

The latest significant one was a couple of hours ago; a 5.3 magnitude (and another 1000 tonnes of TNT): http://www.canterburyquakelive.co.nz/QuakeMap/Single/?reference=3638451g

Someone in Japan has re-traced his 2008 car journey on video, which gives some idea of how huge the loss was at just this one location alone.
(I think this journey is from Rikuzentakata -> Rikuzenyahagi) :

Meanwhile in Christchurch, the de-construction of unsafe buildings still continues:

Haven't forgotten about Japan, even though it was nearly 2 years ago now.

I came across this very moving clip about a young boy's search for his missing mother...unfortunately a scenario which will have been repeated many thousands of times.
