Well, a 16k map is quite enough for me, I even didn’t try to look through the published topography maps of resolution higher than 64 pix/deg. But apparently they are quite ‘striped’ yet. As for the use of different filters, I am a bit skeptical: the best possible map quality is defined by the quality of the available data. At the same time, 16k map, to my mind, is of acceptable quality right now. The situation is the worst in the near-poles areas, due to the significant noise the maps in cylindrical projection. My point was that in fact the acceptable result in this areas is also possible right now, we just need to use maps in stereographic projection.john Van Vliet wrote:repost from UMSF

i just imported the 128 into Nip2 and did a simple "emboss " filter
two screenshots from nip
the second is zoomed in a bit
still need some work but better than the last set
give it a year and it will rival the MOLA
This sounds very encouraging. I agree completely that images from LRO promise much more than old photos from Clementine. Let’s wait. Thank You very much for your work!john Van Vliet wrote:true but for the , now aging , Clementine map ...
It is also very time consuming to warp every crater in isis to the new control network used for the lola dem ( i was aiming at about 90% line up )
i am awaiting the NEW moon images , and there are starting to get onto pds
I also do not think that anyone else will do it for the Clementine map .The new data is WAY better .In time there will be a new map.
PS. Data files are updated again. Didn’t check yet.

Re: new Moon textures from LRO-LOLA data !
a little thread bump to let folks here know that the textures were updated.
http://imbrium.mit.edu/EXTRAS/CELESTIA/
Those match the LOLA PDS release #5 (March 15, 2011). Still level 5 maximum; level 6 is not justified yet, with a fill of ~20% at this point.
John, is the 64k VT available? I couldn't find it on the motherlode.
(as an aside, I've tried uploading the LOLA VTs on celestiamotherlode.net, but could only indicate the name of one of the ZIP files I uploaded on the FTP server... And I guess it takes a few days to get my user ID in order to upload others?)

Re: new Moon textures from LRO-LOLA data !
I have examined JohnVV's remapped 32k VT Moon base-texture at CML with respect to matching up with the new LOLA normalmap data (March 2011 release above).
Unfortunately I found extended regions whith a most disturbing mismatch at higher zoom! Notably, there are long narrow valleys that have "redoubled" looking like "railway tracks"...
This is really a pity.
Here is an example

John,
But the remaining region of substantial mismatch is much larger than a few percent of Moon's surface! The above example is only a small cutout.
I have spent soooo much time fiddling with the 64k Celemetine data and the accompanying artefacts in ISIS3...So I DO know how tough it is to make something good out of it
I just was curious to check how far you made it meanwhile...

as has been stated i was aiming at an aprox 95% to 98% match

I think it is perfectly possible to select the remaining mismatching region and do a slight "by hand" re-adjustment/re-scaling (layers!) with GIMP. With 4GB of RAM + 6GB of swap I can load 32k textures into GIMP and do some work usually. Notably, in case of grayscale images. The result will certainly be a significant improvement compared to the present status.otherwise i would have had to start from scratch and make a fully 100% NEW control-net for ISIS3 to use

as John said, LROC should release some spectacular images once they're satisfied with their calibration/processing. I haven't heard of a date for a global image release (in data form), but will try to ask in a few weeks in LPSC. That would be ideal, as the LROC images are geolocated with the same orbits as LOLA.

LROC released their morphologic global mosaic.

with the individual files here:

Maybe if John is up for it we'll soon see a VT on the motherlode? )
