New Moon map
New Moon map
Hi all,
This is my new Moon map (4K and 8k) with a matching normal map (4k). I used the map from PDS MAP-A-PLANET. The image shows a shot with 4k maps and a real picture.
I think it looks fairly good although no real bump map for Moon is available.
Bye Jens

This doesn't really have to do with the texture, but with the moon in general. Doen't it seem like some of the solar system objects have very bland names? For example there are stars called Polaris, Proxima, Sirius, etc. where as our star is simply called 'the sun'? Or how there are moons called Io, Deimos, Portia, etc. yet our moon is simply called 'the moon'? I mean sometimes they are referred to as Luna or Sol, but this just seems very odd to me.

But it seems the original source of the data is from the Clementine mission (11k), which I am using since a long time as a basis of my own 4k and 8k moon textures. Seen from /close/ distance I find them rather horrible, though. What is different here? On a large distance like above, sure, the view is OK.
I even made a nicely colored one...

Is this texture taken from the web somwhere ?
If so does anyone have the address.
If not ill just wait for jim to get them hosted.

Hey billybob884,
Me again. Well the names do sound bland when you say the sun instead of SOL. And Moon is just the english name for the moon. Its also known as LUNA, and my favorite DIANA. I bet you didn't know our moons name was Diana did you. This makes it fit better into the normal name giving that was done way back. So we have Mecury, Venus, Terra and Diana, Mars, Jupiter, ect..... Sounds better doesn't it.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

I don't agree.
Sorry Don. I couldn't care less. I actually care more about the opposite.
Moon, Sun and Earth are names from a living language, English. They have similar native linguistic representations in many cultures (Maan, Zon, Aarde in Dutch, for instance). The other objects simply have no linguistical representations in the western world, other than those from Latin and Greek or other parts of history.
I'd rather see the other planets having their 'native' names, somewhere in the (distant?) future, than keep using their 'old' names, or even reversing Earth, Moon and Sun back to the past. Simply because using names from our own languages would mean most ('ordinary') living people would recognize these clestial objects as themselves, like they now recognize Moon and Sun. This would point to a much hightened astronomical awareness in our culture, a good thing in my opinion.
By the way, isn't the name for our moon supposed to be something like Selena?

Hi all, hi Fridger
Fridger, the link to this 11k map is death since few months and i can't find an other location. We all know that your Celestia runs with the finest textures. But your texture foundry is antiquated that's no more fine. With all respect of your limited spare time i think one update per year it's not enough.
The distance of my shot correspond to one of 1800 KM by a FOV of 45°. I'd tried to reproduce the image as good as possible. I know that a bump map build form the main texture can't look naturally. Nevertheless, i think the Moon looks more realistic with this bump map. But my old 4k Moon map from gw.marketingden.com looks really horrible used probably by most people here.
Paul, my texture source was http://pdsmaps.wr.usgs.gov/PDS/public/e ... onlvls.htm
Now i need some help. I'd build 3 normal maps. I'm not sure which is the best.
Fridger i think the Moon dosn't look horrible at this short distance
Bye Jens

There are as many names for the moon as there are for other bodies in the solar system. Yes Selene,Selena are other names for the Moon. Just as Ares is another name for Mars, and Zues is another name for Jupiter.
I f we go by new imperical namming shceme then we would now call all the planets in our solar system Sol a,b,c,d, ect...
I don't know is there a proper catalog number for our Sun.

Jens, my mail was not to be interpreted as a criticism of your moon texture! It is very nice, indeed. I was merely trying to find out where the differences arose. I still have here the old 11k Clementine texture which is not available anymore. This /is/ pretty bad quality. It might well be that the raw data you used are /different/ while still being from Clementine.
I am certainly aware that my TeXFoundry needs an updating urgently. But I shall not enter again into this endless explanation why this is more than delicate for me to do with 100's of MBs of new textures...

The closeup is much better than what I have. So the raw textures must be different!

You can get Jims moon texture here currently...

I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!
Hi all,
A 4k moon map is now available at Celestial Visions. Thanks Ras.
Why not 8k ?
- This file would have a size of 12Mb and i have only a modem connection. A higher compressed file suffer a significant quality loss.
- The visible improvment is small. Beliefe me! All my shots made with 4k maps. Together with a 4k normal map you will not see a significant improvement.
If there is an interest i will ulpoad my 4k normal map (not small in size).
Fridger, my old moon map looks similar and i was not happy with this.
