For collectors only: Mars Dust Storm

Hi,
I had (and still have  ) to learn something about the .ssc commands. In this special case the atmospheric color adjustments, especially Mie values and light scattering. Therefore I made this small addon. A cosmic event in june/july 2001 happened on mars. A global dust storm. Because at this time the light conditions of the atmosphere were very different...

For a better viewing I've added a (dust-) cloud layer and an overlay texture map. Further I've changed the normal map.

And, last but not least:
Thanks a lot for your helping pages (ssc/Mie): Bob Hegwood, Fridger Schrempp, Selden Ball, Ulrich "Adirondack" Dickmann!

Regards
Michael

Michael:

These are very good. They strongly resemble the actual storm photos from NASA. Will you be posting the overlay and cloud textures soon on a download site such as motherlode?

The work is done. :D
One question yet; My Mars overlay texture map is based on a 4kMars surface map made by Praesepe.
And of course I will give him credit in the readme file.
But do I need a permission in such a case? I also ask for other projects in the future. :?:
Thanks for help

Sorry. As a further comment I should explain something; I wrote this because sometimes it's annoying me if some (not all and not many) people, regard this work as a matter of course.

Because they - Bob Hegwood, Ulrich Dickmann and John Van Vliet as well (just read it last night) - do this work in their free time. Not to forget the creators and those guys who are always working silently in the background...

For us! And without earning any money...

Can I just quickly point out that I would pay a lot of money for such wonderful software. Sometimes I make the experience, that a few people are thinking: Things that nothing cost is nothing worth.

But, remember, the most important things in our life you cannot buy. You can't buy love or friendship, neither sanity nor intelligence, nor insight, truth, creativity or freedom and peace.

Yes, you can buy a super computer with many features and knick knacks. But what is it worth if you use your expensive equipment only to play with useless games?

As already mentioned, I was annoyed. I may apologize for the hard words (In german I would write more kindly). Especially younger people need time to learn...

Michael,

I'm so sorry for not responding in time. It's been a very long time since I last connected to the forum but I come sometimes to keep an eye on news. Great addon! I don't know if you used my texture at last but in any case you've got my permission of course.

Hey Massimo,

Thanks for your friendly encouragement :)

If I'm reading here at shatters.net I see more and more - if someone has a problem - you are a very helpful person!
...and probably a very good guy (behind the iron skin)

Thanks again

Hi Praesepe,

Good to hear that you're feeling alright! :D
praesepe wrote:I'm so sorry for not responding in time.
No matter. Was not a real problem for me. I only had to change the mars-layer in photoshop and made some color corrections.
I still appreciate your work for Celestia

Thanks for your kind reply

Eh, Eh! Don't be divert by the precedent half avatar: that was a 35 year old photo. Now I'm really much more similar to Vader skin (no longer hair and wounds here and there) :P

But wait... 35 years ago? and you worn long hair...? Then you probably grew up during the so called "Flower-Power" movement...?

So, let The Sunshine in and let the good times roll... and those wounds begin to heal

Oh, I just see, you're wearing new sun glasses 8) , a good first step, indeed :)

Well, a tad before that Weltanschauung of which I recall, indeed. So, let me add: Not Fade Away > I Heard It Through the Grapevine

Massimo! THIS is not the roman civilization I was talkin' about!

But, you're blond? And a musician, too?!
And, yes, this is the right noise to simulate the stormy Mars-wind...

I prefer the longhaired guys from the classic league. And the "heart-playing" american Blues-guys, of course :)

Well, "barbarians" were ROCKS, not Romans: they were more "funky". Then: when in hell Romans brought civilization? Do you know about a "Roman physics"? A "Roman mathematics" more deeper of that of Greeks ones? They were just good artisans with a more exaustive language and a set of laws. Nothing else. And what is now the Romans' product: Mr. B.? A man who declared the physicist Enrico Fermi like the man who realized the nuclear energy by splitting "the cells"(sic!).

Massimo,

I don't think so. It's simply a matter of fact; the culture of the western world is basically founded on the Greek and Roman civilisation. Especially our social life on the Romans. But, what does it matter?

Who pick out his birth place, parents, nationality or the colour of his hair or skin? Maybe first of all Germans had to learn this simple wisdom. On this place I don't wanna go deeper in to this topic. ( only to avoid that it could be deleted :-[ )

A few days ago I saw a documentation on ARTE (a french-german culture, science and art TV channel) about the origin of mankind. They said the very first homo sapiens population had only about 600 members. We are all related with each other...!

If we wanna go to Mars, Venus or to an habitable exoplanet some day we can do this only together. :( :?: :? :!:   :D

But their descendants are good footballers, artists, musicians, painters, explorers... and scientists, too! And you (Italian) are a better educated "physicist" than me (Barbarian)

(Hm, who is Mr.B, Mr.B....? Do you mean the hidden lover of our Mrs. M...? )

Mr. B. is the cucu's man; who speaking at phone while certain cancelor wait... Precisely the man who do nothing to sustain the forementioned activities (apart footballers... :? ). Romans had a slogan: panem et circenses (bread and games) with which to learn people. That rules a "civilization"? Of course then there has been the Dark Ages; and "barbarians" aren't responsibles; but on the contrary wiped out such "way of thinking" and, through Arabs, moved the civilization toward now. (this is just my view in matter). But I think is best to stop here, or we will run on Mars by discourses...
