Selected Object text off-screen
Someone has probably already noticed or reported this, but just in case...
I was running Celestia (1.6.0) today on a Windows 7 wide-screen (16:9) laptop and found that the selected object text (at top left of the screen) is displayed halfway (or more) outside the screen.
Incidentally, this is the first time that I've run Celestia on anything other than a 4:3 aspect screen.

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
I have a new computer running Windows 7 with 16:9 too. The way I fix that is pressing the maximize button.

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
I have the same problem with my Windows 7 Laptop. Maximising it does not fix it for me, but going to Fullscreen Mode does.
Also, I can't click on a star to select it, but I have to click below the star (a distance equal to the displacement of the text in the corner).

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
That sounds like what was happening for me. I didn't try full-screen mode, but, like you, I did have some difficulties clicking on objects... which at the time I attributed to my unfamiliarity with the particular touchpad, but given what you describe re: clicking on stars, may well have been the same issue.Hungry4info wrote:I have the same problem with my Windows 7 Laptop. Sounds like Celestia's "viewport" is a little out of whack in the Windows 7 environment.
This prob should be logged as a bug at sourceforge as Windows 7 will become the standard pretty soon.

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
Here's a screenshot, I tried to highlight the most important features of the bug. I had to do PrtScrn because Celestia's built in screen capture produced normal results (i.e. non-bugged)
-- Text too far up.
-- Have to right click below a star to select it (in this case, ? Sgr, which I marked with green)
-- Gap between bottom of display window and bottom of Celestia's display.

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
I'm hungry for info Hungry4info (sorry, couldn't resist ),
Do you have XP-Mode (Virtualization) on your machine?... I'm thinking that you could run it in XP-mode to isolate whether the problem is related to the aspect-ratio or a faulty Win-7 display driver.
If the problem persists in XP-Mode then it's probably to do with the 16:9 ratio, which is likely to be a fault in Celestia's code.
If all is good in XP-Mode, then it's maybe just a bad display driver in Windows 7.

I don't have the Win XP mode. I just tried running Celestia in Win XP SP3 compatability mode and it failed to resolve the issue.
Also, I changed my resolution to 1024 x 768 (4:3) and this did not fix it either.
I don't know how useful this is, but the gap between the bottom of the display window and the Celestia screen is 20 px, which is exactly the width of the menu bar (with File, View, etc). It's almost as if Celestia is not taking into account the menu bar when drawing.

Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
That is useful information.
I think the long term plan is to replace all native versions of Celestia with a QT version in the near future, in which case the DEVs would account for any differences between OS's in the development of QT Celestia.
It is interesting however, that the problem also appeared in XP compatibility mode... which seems to imply that the problem has something to do with the aspect ratio, rather than the OS.
In the meantime (until QT Celestia is released) this bug will be a bit of an annoyance (especially the fact that mouse clicks are not accurate).

Chuft, which ratio of 16:9 do you have tried as graphic card's resolution?

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
No idea. it was widescreen laptop, but that's all I know: http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15985&p=123125#p123125
I think the details you've provided are probably enough now to alert the Devs so that thiis won't be an issue in QT Celestia. I don't expect that they will be spending any time fixing bugs like this in the Windows version, because the current plan as I understand it, is to replace all native versions of Celestia with the QT version.
( I'm not sure when the QT version is likely to be released... Chris? )

If they are allowed by you graphic card, you can try the resolutions below to see whether something changes:
1280x1024
1440x960 (which is widescreen)
1704x960

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
What build are you running guys?
Plain 1.6 from the official distribution or a more recent build?
If you are running original 1.6 and an ATI graphic card, then you may be hitting this old bug:
http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15529
If this is the case, then try a fresher build from SVN and drop the FirePro atioglxx.dll right in your Celestia root folder (where the exec sits).
It may work for you.
Good luck!
For your convenience, here is a pack that includes both regular and Qt execs and the ATI dll:

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
Thanks for the info Boux. That does indeed describe the problem.
Is that QT build compatible with XP, or is it for Windows 7/Vista only?Boux wrote:For your convenience, here is a pack that includes both regular and Qt execs and the ATI dll:

Re: Selected Object text off-screen
You are welcome...
The Qt executable is a win32 application.
It will work on any XP/Vista/Seven, 32- or 64-bit flavour.
You will need a few Qt dlls sitting in the Celestia folder if Qt has not been compiled/installed on your system yet.
In case you don't have them handy, just tell me.
I will upload them to my ftp.

I also noticed this bug on my Windows 7 laptop. Newer Celestia builds fixed the problem (i.e. the bug is already fixed in current development builds).

That's good to know. Never the less, I think I'll stick to Nvidia graphics in the future.

I have the latest build I could find and I'm using Vista yet some text of selected objects are still off the screen. It only does it if the selected object has a long name.
