You can easily deactivate your add-ons for testing, by clicking on "deactivate" in the add-on listing. What's the problem here?
I've already disabled all addons manually, and also ran the browser in Safe Mode which disables all addons. Neither made any change (so I retract my earlier statement, where I was "almost 100% sure now that this problem is due to interference from a Firefox addon/extension").
IMO (now) it's something to do with interaction between this version of the core code of the browser itself, and my OS.
Notably, this is a 5 year old machine and I have been unable to upgrade the OS past SP1 since many years ago, despite many attempts. (I think some essential service was corrupted or deleted early on which is preventing the SP2 install from completing.)
That is the most obvious difference between your config and mine...I suspect this version of the browser may rely on some SP2 functionality (although Mozilla make no mention of Service Pack levels in the release notes:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html).

Cheers Massimo, but as I have run FF in safe mode with no change, that rules out the extension from being at fault. (See comments above).
I really think now that the time is well overdue for me to do a factory reset of this laptop (and maybe even a disk format), then SP2, SP3 install. Unfortunately, the price of that will be the loss of all sorts of data, customizations, codecs, etc..., (not to mention the loss of 1 week + of my life!
).
