Hi,

Chuft-Captain wrote:No difference after a fresh install to "celestia 160".
Interestingly though, after installation, registry entries still had "celestia 1.6.0" in them.
Even more interesting: modification and application of your .REG file to replace "celestia 1.6.0" with "celestia 160" also had no effect on the registry. (Although it still claimed sucess...)

Bad luck :(
Still a bug on your system. For me that works perfectly

Chuft-Captain wrote:I'm wondering if it is correct for the URL Protocol to be blank??

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\cel]
    @="URL:cel Protocol"
    "URL Protocol"=""

I'm not sure what the original value of this key was, but I notice that the .REG file sets it to "".

Yes. This is the correct setting.

OK,

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm almost 100% sure now that this problem is due to interference from a Firefox addon/extension.
I get scripts hanging the browser constantly which is apparently usually due to buggy Firefox addons, but it's very difficult to narrow down which particular one is at fault.
eg.
script01.JPG
script03.JPG

This "hanging" behaviour may also IMO be the cause of celURL's not working in FF.
In general, I have to say that I've had more problems with Firefox 3.6.3 than all earlier versions combined. (I don't know what other people's experience is).
More likely, I think it's due to buggy addons or OS issues, than with FF itself though.

Cheers

CC,

just to tell you that I also have NO problems with celURLs and firefox 3.6.3 under Windows XP/SP3. -> AHA ;-)

You can easily deactivate your add-ons for testing, by clicking on "deactivate" in the add-on listing. What's the problem here?

Here are my FF add-ons. They definitely don't create problems:

DownThemAll 1.1.10
FireFTP 1.0.9
Forecastfox 0.9.10.2
JavaConsole 6.0.11
Java Quickstarter 1.0
Microsoft.Net Framework Assistant 0.0.0
Norton IPS 2.0
Norton Toolbar 4.6
ReminderFox 1.9.8.1
Undo Closed Tabs Button 3.6.2
Xmarks 3.6.14

With plugins it's also not hard...

Chuft, note the .js I think is Java your problem. One Java FF extension before the 6.0.20 version was problematic and FF did deactivate it by default, if I'm not recall bad.
Never at rest.

I've already disabled all addons manually, and also ran the browser in Safe Mode which disables all addons. Neither made any change (so I retract my earlier statement, where I was "almost 100% sure now that this problem is due to interference from a Firefox addon/extension").
IMO (now) it's something to do with interaction between this version of the core code of the browser itself, and my OS.
Notably, this is a 5 year old machine and I have been unable to upgrade the OS past SP1 since many years ago, despite many attempts. (I think some essential service was corrupted or deleted early on which is preventing the SP2 install from completing.)
That is the most obvious difference between your config and mine...I suspect this version of the browser may rely on some SP2 functionality (although Mozilla make no mention of Service Pack levels in the release notes: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html).

Cheers Massimo, but as I have run FF in safe mode with no change, that rules out the extension from being at fault. (See comments above).

I really think now that the time is well overdue for me to do a factory reset of this laptop (and maybe even a disk format), then SP2, SP3 install. Unfortunately, the price of that will be the loss of all sorts of data, customizations, codecs, etc..., (not to mention the loss of 1 week + of my life!).

CC,

Tonight I downloaded and installed Firefox 3.6.3 to laptop mentioned below, and all CEL//URL's are working fine.

Thanks VTech,

Just out of interest, ...why are you not running 1.6.0 on your quite capable Desktop?

CC,

That system is about 4 years old. Since it's always run 1.4.1 so well, and since there have been significant changes in newer versions, I keep 1.4.1 for comparisons and for features that have since been deleted, changed or deprecated. Though I've read of users who run multiple versions on a single machine, it seems to keep things "cleaner" and more organized to have two separate set-ups—especially when it comes to celx scripts and add-ons.

By the way, have you uploaded a description of your CEL//URL problem to the Firefox site? Am wondering if FF has experienced similar problems with other types of URL's or dependencies.

Hope you get FF working again.

CC,

now and then I also get such warnings about unresponsive (.js) scripts (maybe caused by the NoScript add-on).
Nevertheless your celURL works fine with FF 3.66! Just FYI.

As far as I remember, the correct process to register cel URLs with Firefox is the following:
Enter "about:config" (without the quotes) in Firefox' address bar.
There will be some warning blurb. Just go on.
- right click, select "New" then "String"
- the name of the string should be :
"network.protocol-handler.warn-external.cel"
-next select "Value"
- value of the executable field should look like: "E:\Celestia\celestia.exe" (or whatever path to celestia on your system).
Restart FF.
Worth trying!

It works also for sure but... I am more a command-line guy and I like to see how things work under a pretty pop-up window.
This is a network protocol and the proper way to understand what is happening under the hood is to go the dirty road and have a peek - and poke lol - at the guts.

Tried the Boux approach (with, and without quotes on the value string), to no avail...

John, in my Firefox 3.6.6 it's Tools / Options / applications-tab

Sure, Windows.

I have tried both suggestions...
    1. changing string on about:config to "C:\Program Files\Celestia\celestia.exe"
    2. Browsing to C:\Program Files\Celestia\celestia.exe in the Applications TAB

but I'm still getting this when I click on a celURL in Firefox:
invalid.JPG
whereas IE has no problems.

Thanks for your efforts, but it looks like I'll just have to use IE to execute celURL's for a while longer.

Celurl's are located at the protocols associations, not file type associations.
