Missing planet textures in Gnome (Ubuntu)

I'm using the latest version of Celestia- the Gnome version in Ubuntu. When I visit a planet- Mars or the Moon for instance- I just see a mono colored disk without the surface textures. I''m using the latest NVIDIA drivers, and I downloaded Gnome Celestia from Ubuntu's "Software Center".
Thanks for any help with this.

I know nothing about the Ubuntu Celestia kit, but you can download any of Celestia's surface texture image files from the archive on SourceForge at
http://celestia.svn.sourceforge.net/vie ... /textures/

This is a problem caused by the Ubuntu package maintainers. This is not the responsibility of the Celestia development team.

In short, installing Celestia from the Add Application box leaves you with an incomplete install: the remaining textures are in a separate package because of licensing issues. This is not indicated at all if you are installing Celestia from this dialog box. Personally I think it would make more sense to shift the whole application into the nonfree repositories rather than deliver a broken application to the users, but you will need to take that up with the Ubuntu package maintainers.

To get the remaining textures, make sure you have the nonfree repositories enabled, then open a console window and type the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install celestia-common-nonfree

Celestia is technically not broken.
And about Ubuntu, the best solution for Celestia would be to have Linux packagers here.
That makes sure Celestia can be packaged the way developers want and keeping Celestia up to date.
