Can I somehow get more then one cloud texture on a planet, such as a gas giant,
Multiple cloud maps would give the impression of a ever changing planet,
For example: the bands of Jupiter could have a different map then the red spot, and the speeds can bee a gusted to look lick they are moving and then giving the impression that of a gas giant planet,
One cloud map looks lick there is no atmospheric movement,
Right
Then there might be problems such as cloud shadows. But that is a different story ,

Dunno if you have seen it or not, but one way to get moving clouds exists HERE.
Absolutely beautiful for Jupiter. Have a try.
Thanks, Brain-Dead

Just for the history of animated Jupider cloud belts: The first one I did early 2002, about 8 years ago . The texture may still be downloaded from the first texture data base for Celestia: my good old Celestia TexFoundry (that has never been updated since July 2002. The reason was that at this time, I had to use my lab's server for those massive transfers, which was not permitted... ).

Hey, thanks very much there Good Doctor.
I had completely forgotten those textures.
Take care, Brain-Dead

Hey Bob,
just noted for the fun of it that my TexFoundry had 204336 visitors during the last 8 years. No comparison, of course, with the ML that is kept up carefully by some VERY dedicated friends . Incidentally, our CM forum and CM Website had more than double the page loads (~450000) since the start of CM (about three years ago).

Yes I tried the Jupiter and earth cloud maps that you meshed,
But they use only one map for the planet,
I ment something like this
But it did not wreck

That doesn't work in Celestia. You got to do it right.
You have to use a Jupiter texture with fixed "background clouds" along with a superimposed, semi-transparent (equatorial) cloud belt with some relative movement. The animation effect is quite good.
Here is my solarsys.ssc that I use in extras for Jupi:
It's a very simple setup. More complex ones are possible.
Code: Select all
Modify "Jupiter" "Sol"
{
Texture "jupiter.png"
SpecularTexture "jupiter-spec.dds"
SpecularColor [ 0.2 0.2 0.257 ]
SpecularPower 10.5
Atmosphere
{
Height 300
CloudSpeed 800
CloudMap "jupiter-clouds.png"
}
}
Never mind about this jupiter-spec.dds file. Un-comment it.
Here is a brief 1024x768 video sequence (XVid/MPEG4 format), so you see how it looks like.
http://www.celestiaproject.net/~t00fri/images/jupi.avi
You may have to download it first (~ 2MB) if your line to the US is slow.
The format works on all OS with the VLC player (vlc-mozillaplugin!) and for Windows also with the Media player 11 (possibly with the required codec added)
Fridger
PS: note I have some criticism about the Jupiter-cloud addon in the ML. I think it is important to extend the moving cloud animation ONLY along the WHITE cloud belts in the equatorial zone! Otherwise -- as visible in the ML add-on-- you can see e.g. the Red-Spot overlay (and other conspicuous marks) move away from the Red spot in the background texture. The white cloud belts are rather featureless and hence no such "inconsistencies" are visible.

Well, I visit the CM Forum every day, so I'm part of those statistics. Hee, hee...

Re: Multiple clouds textures
You'll have to make separate planet definitions for each cloud layer, assigning each (except the original planet) an either nonexistent or empty mesh so they don't interfere with the planet's surface. Define the cloud layers at different altitudes and speeds; remember that lower layers move faster. I've done this before, it made a great effect. Of course, it was on Celestia 1.4.1. I'll have to try it on 160-ED to see if this trick still works.

I think the ability to add multiple rings and clouds would be very cool!

In this thread is discussed how to do for adding multiple rings to the objects.

Here is another thing you could try for multiple rings.
