Bookmarks

I created a new bookmark and also a new folder within Bookmarks. However, they disappear on the next opening of Celestia. What am I doing wrong?

Did you make certain to press the OK tab after the changes were made?
That's the only thing I can think of, unless you didn't create them correctly.

The Windows bookmarks file is "plain text." If you're careful, you can edit it using your favorite text editor (e.g. notepad). Save a copy first, of course, so you'll have something to go back to when it gets damaged beyond repair. ;)

Hello and thanks for the replies.
I made sure I'm clicking "ok" after creating a new bookmark, and it shows under Bookmarks, but disappears when I next open Celestia.
I had a search for "bookmarks" within the Celestia folder but nothing came up. Can you give me a clue to where it lives? I'm not really sure what I'm to do with it once I'm there though. This is a new install of Celestia on a new laptop and I'm using the bookmarks feature for the first time. The only change I've made to the internals is copying over the "extras" folder from my old PC so that I didn't need to download texture files and the likes again.

ok, after a little research would I be correct in saying I need the favorites.cel file? I don't appear to have one in my main Celestia folder so I copied the file from my old PC's Celestia (which I think was version 5) and I can see the bookmarks there but they're not doing much, they just give me a lot of space. A new bookmark also shows but again disappears after closing andthe re-opening Celestia.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Running Windows 7.

I believe this failure to update the bookmarks file is the result of Celestia being installed in C:\Program Files\. Win7 is very protective of everything in that directory tree. There are plans to make the next version of Celestia work better in that kind of environment, using a search list and putting the writable configuration files into a user-owned directory.

In the meantime, a workaround that should work would be to uninstall Celestia and reinstall it into C:\Celestia\ instead of the default C:\Program Files\Celestia\

Thanks Selden. I was writing the post below when you posted. I will try the resinstall.

"I think I have managed to solve the problem of creating a permanent bookmark (remains there after re-opening Celestia) but I have to run Celestia as Administrator. Does anyone know why this is and if there is a work around? Something to do with Windows 7 perhaps?

Thanks."

Just saw this (somewhat late).

Since most Win 7 users are working in 64bit mode these days (due to multi-core CPU's being standard now), the default location for the 32bit Celestia package is NOT C:\Program Files\. This directory is reserved for 64bit programs. The 32bit stuff running under 64bit Win7 goes to C:\Program Files (X86)\. It will take a little while until we'll have a clean 64bit Celestia. The main reason being that all service libs need to be recompiled in 64bit...
