Hi all,
I was using Celestia 1.5.1 for a while and I just noticed 1.6 is available. I downloaded it with hopes that a certain bug might have disappeared. Though, I think this "bug" is actually a conflict with my new operating system.
I'm using Mac OS 10.6.1 (snow leopard).
Attached are screenshots of the sun, earth, and jupiter. Jupiter and Earth appear only as a gossamer circular outline. The sun has a rather stately yellow square centered over it. Finally, the English language has been "translated" into an alien tongue (a joke ). This strange transition happens when I switch back to windowed mode from full-screen mode.
If there is any other useful information I can provide, please let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Wow... Something is going seriously wrong with your Celestia installation. I have a 2.5 year old MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard installed and have no trouble running Celestia. What sort of Mac do you have? Also, do the planets look OK before you switch to windowed mode?

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towindow
Hi Chris,
My mac is somewhat over 2 years old and it's also a MacBook Pro. Yeah, Celestia looks beautiful before I switch to windowed-mode.
Here's the progression:
Starts off in windowed-mode: good
Switch to full-screen: still good
switch back to windowed-mode: no good
But, of course, if I restart Celestia, everything is just fine again.
So, you don't think it's a conflict with Snow Leopard? Unfortunately, I can't check this because I have only one mac. Though, I don't recall (my memory could be faulty) this being an issue before my OS upgrade.
Do you have any suggestions? If not, it's not the end of the world. I can always just restart Celestia if necessary. I just wanted to present this bug in case it hadn't been reported already. Conferring with others using snow leopard would definitely narrow down the reason for this anomaly.
Thanks,
Chris

I get the same under 10.6.1 also...

That's "good". At least now we have some support for the it's-an-incompatibility-between-celestia-and-snow-leopard-rather-than-a-bug-per-se hypothesis.

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towindow
Yes... I rarely use the full screen function so no probs... I can always drag the window to that size.
Sometimes at night. after a few beers, I like to set it to Mir (invisible) and use the monitor as a window, Synch Orbit mode... if you like... it's very relaxing!
Might even listen to DroneZone or GrooveSalad!

I'll have to check those bands out. I've done similarly with some Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff.
You have to turn off all names, markers, orbits and info for the full effect to, of course.
Chris
beer sounds good...

Well... Dronezone and GrooveSalad are radio stations (Ambient - check the radio options for iTunes)... beer is nice although I'm most often sober these days!
Glad you're enjoying Celestia... I need some bumpy clouds!

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towindow
Now this is extremely annoying. I'm testing a new MacBook Pro 15" in an Apple store, right now, and installed the official Celestia 1.6.0 on it. I confirm there's a huge display problem, after switching OFF the full screen mode of Celestia (using the usual Command-F). Apparently, this is an OpenGL bug, but I'm not sure of this.
Really, this sucks, since I'm preparing myself to buy a MBP during the following months, to use Celestia in the classroom.
I'll also test the compass plug-in to confirm there's a problem with OS X Snow-Leopard...
DARN !

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towindow
I tested the Compass plug-in, and it's working great, on Snow-Leopard
However, I confirm that there's a display problem after quitting the full screen mode. The bug is systematic and very easy to reproduce. I have to quit and restart Celestia to solve the issue. I don't have this problem on OS X Tiger.
Da Woon, where are you ?
EDIT : I forgot to say that these tests were done on Snow-Leopard 10.6.0 (I can't test 10.6.1 right now).

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towi
Same problem here (after coming back from full-screen), on a Mac running 10.6.4.
Pity, but also strange, because it was working fine with the just deleted Celestia 1.5.1. So it can't be 'only' Snow Leopard, can it?
Best regards,
Michael

Re: 1.6 Display problem when switching from full screen towi
I'm having this problem as well. I just bought a brand new iMac in July and whenever I switch from fullscreen to window, this happens. Very annoying.
It would be helpful if someone could acknowledge this thread and say "Yes, we know it's happening but we don't know why, and we're working on it."

tinmanic:
There is indeed a problem with switching from fullscreen mode on the Mac, and we are working on it. Unfortunately, we're no closer to a fix now than we were a few months ago.
For anyone who's done some OpenGL programming: it appears that the textures and other resources associated with the OpenGL context are being deleted when switching from fullscreen mode. This happens even though a shared context is requested.
