Computer troubles

Hi guys,

looks like it is now my time to have trouble with my computer. Luckyly I still have two of those things, otherwise I couldn't even ask for help.

As my drives were getting awfully full on my good machine I decided to add a Terrabyte drive. After everything was connected I wanted to start the machine, but it won't start.

The monitor stays black, the motherboard starts, the fans begin to turn and then around 3 seconds later everything is shut down and rebooted and after around 3 seconds shutdown and reboot ... and so on.

On closer look I saw that the fan of the CPU only starts for a very short time and then stops, even before the rest is rebooted.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

The motherboard is a GIGABYTE model GA-965P-DS4

No, no such luck. Even if the new drive is removed, the computer launches into endless restarts.

The CPU's fan behavior, recall one similar situation happened to me 3 year ago; in that case the CPU was broken due to a inavvertite translation of the dissipator during the case's handle. Hope this is not your situation. Another thought could be the power supply, damaged after major power required by the new disk. These are cause which impedes to the motherboard to get sound. Whether you motherboard get sounds, the things should be different, i.e. video card, memory and disk.

With the help of a friend I found the culprit.

I can adjust the speed of the fans with potentiometers. Looks like one cable going to the CPU Fan potentiometer was damaged and so the CPU Fan was not running. As the motherboard monitors the fan speed it immediately shut down, so not to damage anything.

It is now fixed, but it looks like my windows installation got a bit damaged in the process or perhaps something changed in the BIOS as we resetted it. have to take a further look at things.

But boy am I happy that it is NOT a CPU or motherboard damage.

For future reference - I've found out (the hard way) that a funky / broken CD or DVD drive can cause the system to behave erratically; Stuff like not booting, or rebooting all of the sudden by itself, or hard drives (especially if they're on the same cable) causing the OS to report strange read/write errors. If you run into that situation, pull the CD/DVD drive and see if things settle down.
