Amalthea

Post #1by BobHegwood » 30.09.2009, 16:16

Have found a serious problem either with my locations file, or with the models of
Amalthea located at both the Motherlode and at the Celestia repository.

Cannot get the locations to match with either of the models available.
Is or has there been a revision to the locations file for Amalthea?

Sorry, confused (as usual) Brain-Dead Bob

Bob:
I'm using the Amalthea distribution model and jupitermoons_locs.ssc, as stored on the current SVN tree, and have no problems.
For your reference, here is a screenshot of what my Amalthea locations look like. There's also a large crater called Gaea at Amalthea's south pole.
And here are the corresponding definitions from the start of jupitermoons.locs.ssc:

Code: Select all

Location "Gaea" "Sol/Jupiter/Amalthea"
{
    LongLat [ -90 -80 0 ]
    Size 80
    Type "AA"
}

Location "Pan" "Sol/Jupiter/Amalthea"
{
    LongLat [ -35 55 0 ]
    Size 90
    Type "AA"
}

Location "Ida Facula" "Sol/Jupiter/Amalthea"
{
    LongLat [ -175 20 0 ]
    Size 50
    Type "FA"
}

Location "Lyctos Facula" "Sol/Jupiter/Amalthea"
{
    LongLat [ -120 -20 0 ]
    Size 30
    Type "FA"
}

Of course I can't vouch for the Motherlode model: it's common enough for Motherlode modellers to create models that don't match Celestia's coordinate system. But I'm surprised if you have a problem with the distribution model. Is it possible that you've downloaded the old amalthea.3ds file from the SVN repository, for some reason? It's no longer distributed, and (IIRC) doesn't work properly with the current location files, which are set up for the (distributed) amalthea.cmod model.

Yes, that is exactly what I did Grant. I used the 3ds model just as a means of comparison.
I'll go back to the SVN tree and see if I can figure out what I've done wrong.

Thanks very much for the help, Brain-Dead :wink:

Finally figured it out Grant...

Somehow my amalthea.jpg texture got flipped both horizontally and vertically, so it wasn't the model that was bad,
it was the texture itself. After I replaced the texture with the SVN medres texture, that solved the problems.

Sorry, but thanks again for your excellent advice. Led me to the appropriate solution. :)

Take care, Brain-Dead
