Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
I'm about to update the first message with several other addons during the following days (mostly nebulae billboards and the latest pulsars database, some interacting galaxies supercomputer simulations ...). So stay tuned.

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
Just to say that I've updated the first message (on the first page) to publish three more billboard addons (M20, IC4604 and a database of "serious" black holes candidates).

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
First message has been updated with the new FULL ATNF pulsars database (2009). Includes many features.

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
First thanks for all this work.
Just 1 thing
I couldn't download Light deviation around a Schwarzschild black hole :
http://fsgregs.startlogic.com/Public_Fi ... iation.zip (5.8 MB)
Seems to be a bad link!?

The first message have been updated, to add some new black hole models (sprites accretion disks and jets, ...).

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
I've updated the first message on the first page with a new addon. Look out for the Earth's seashores layer with its toggle CELX script.

Very nice Cham,
Looks good from a distance, however as I get closer the coastlines get fainter and fainter then disappear completely.
Is this intended?

Yes, this is on purpose. The shores are pretty crude at close range and don't match very well the textures, so I prefer a "dots" model over a "lines" version, in this case. And a "lines" version is much harder to do from the data, anyway.

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
I made a model of the sea level, 18000 BC. Sadly, it's too crude, at close range.

I'm trying to find good data for some sea level rising...

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
Martin, FYI, magnetic fields are fantastics and works perfectly on my system. For this purpose I've made script for its interaction with the planetary interiors. The script assign to the keys Ctrl+i and Ctrl+1 the Planetary_Interiors and Magnetic_Fields functions respectively.
Ctrl+i enable Planetary_Interiors;
Ctrl+1 enable Magnetic_Fields;
These keys are interactive:
Ctrl+i disable Magnetic_Fields if active;
Ctrl+1 disable Planetary_Interiors if active;
For having both the add-ons invisibles at start and then showed when the keys are hits, this script need to be launched
at start. Magnetic fields' names are in French (UTF-8) as shipped within previous page's add-ons, so after installation the script is ready to work; for planetary interiors does check the entries about name of the add-on one use. This script is easy to follow in its structure for adding further entries one want hide/unhide.
Would be interesting if the controlkey Ctrl+m could be free from showing the Enter prompt so to be assigned to the magnetic fields. Does perhaps the ctrl+m key is required by Unix platform? Just curious here.
Note upon performances:
On my system (EIDE disks), one by chance of the Magnetic fields as it is, in ASCII and 3DS formats, loads from scratch in 3 seconds; after conversion in CMOD binary loads in half second.

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
I'm working on a model for the interior of our Sol. Here's a preview (not finished yet) :

EDIT : Some color adjustements. An informational text layer will be added later (proper names, density, temperature, thermonuclear reaction, etc...) :

Martin:
I just downloaded and installed the Magnetic Dipole add-on for the planets, and discovered that the North Pole of the magnetic field of Earth is actually pointing off the South geographic pole. Here is the screenshot.
Is this normal? If so, I never knew that Earth's south magnetic pole actually comes out of the North Pole of Earth

Yes, this is normal.
It never occured to you that the magnetic north of a compass (a magnet) was pointing to the magnetic south of Earth, which is located near the geographic north ?
See the references included in the SSC file :

Don't be fooled by all the terms used everywhere (there's a lot of confusion about "poles" on the internet) : magnetic poles, geomagnetic poles, geographic poles, etc...

Well ... I'll be damned! It never did occur to me.

If you want more informations, just get closer to Earth while my field is activated. Look out for the clickable small disks floating close to the north (and south) pole, click on them and select the associated URL in the contextual menu (in Celestia) :

Re: NEW addons (DOWNLOAD LINKS)
OK, Martin, now I am really confused. I went searching for the the location of "magnetic North", and ran across 100's of references all pointing to the same answer. It is in the Arctic not too far from true North. I then went onto two of the websites you listed in your reply above. Here is what the NOAA site says:
Regarding the location of Magnetic North, NOAA stated this:
I went to a second reference you listed in your reply (Natural Resources Canada), and here is a direct quote from their site:
I did find some references in a few websites that describe the South Magnetic Field Pole located in the Arctic, but this seems to be a real difference of opinion or terminology.
Based on the current WMM model, the 2005 location of the geomagnetic north pole is 79.74°N and 71.78°W and the geomagnetic south pole is 79.74°S and 108.22°E.
Regarding the location of Magnetic North, NOAA stated this:
Based on the current WMM model, the 2005 location of the north magnetic pole is 83.21°N and 118.32°W and the south magnetic pole is 64.53°S and 137.86°E.
I went to a second reference you listed in your reply (Natural Resources Canada), and here is a direct quote from their site:
The Earth's magnetic field is shaped approximately like that of a bar magnet and, like a magnet, it has two magnetic poles, one in the Canadian arctic, referred to as the North Magnetic Pole, and one off the coast of Antarctica, south of Australia, referred to as the South Magnetic Pole. At the North Magnetic Pole the Earth's magnetic field is directed vertically downward relative to the Earth's surface.

I did find some references in a few websites that describe the South Magnetic Field Pole located in the Arctic, but this seems to be a real difference of opinion or terminology.

Cham wrote:Don't be fooled by all the terms used everywhere (there's a lot of confusion about "poles" on the internet) : magnetic poles, geomagnetic poles, geographic poles, etc...
Greg,
Like I said, there are LOTS of terminology confusions about the magnetic poles on the internet. Most references are using "north magnetic pole" as in "north's magnetic pole", or in other words "The magnetic pole in the north hemisphere". This magnetic pole is really a Magnetic South pole.
Also, if you read carefully your last quote above, you'll learn that the magnetic field lines are entering Earth at the geographic north (what they call the north magnetic pole). Well, in magnetism theory, magnetic field lines are going from the real magnetic north pole to the real magnetic south pole. This shows that the north pole is actually a true magnetic south.
All this is perfectly clear to me, and there isn't any mistake in the addon I published.
EDIT : All this confusion is also one of the reasons why I made this addon : to made it clear that the geographic north pole is actually a magnetic south pole (with some offset, of course) !
It is really sad that many scientific web sites are perpetuating this confusion (especially the canadian geographic institute which is studying the location of the "north magnetic pole" == "north's magnetic pole" == "magnetic pole in the north"). I believe that most of this confusion is caused by the way the English language is made. There is no equivalent in French, in this case.
Lastly : North magnetic pole [tex]\not=[/tex] Magnetic north pole
