Saturn Loading lags and error message

Post #1by JAY_1976 » 16.07.2009, 16:54

Note : I haven't upgrade the textures to a high resolution , i use the default 1.60 textures , i only have Earth in high resolution
I experience very big loading lags when i go to Saturn. The program freezes for almost a minute loading textures of moons that are not visible or are dots
I rotate around the planet and the program freezes again so i quit celestia using the task manager because i loose my patience waiting.
This happens only when i go to saturn and i had it since the 1.5 version but i didn't post it
I know saturn has many moons but why loading textures of bodies that their disk is not visible or they are out of camera's field ?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Also a minor bug that i mentioned on the 1.6.0 RC3 version which you can find here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13885 (the 11th post) still exists in the final version. Here it is

When executing the "Show Redshifts of Galaxies" scenario the following message appears
Fatal Error
Timeout : Script hasn't returned control to Celestia ( forgot to call wait ()? )

the answer was that the 1.60 RC3 was compiled with Optimization turned off but is this the case for the final version too ?

That is certainly not what I experience or anyone I heard of. Are you really sure that you have a fresh Celestia 1.6.0final with NOTHING copied in by hand from some other source??
On my Core2Duo 2.GHz laptop all textures are read in in only 10 seconds (Earth being visible in the screen center). Going to Saturn takes less than 5 seconds from there until it is visible on screen. If there was a bug in Celestia, how could it work so well in my machine? Many people should have complained if this effect was due to 1.6.0final.

I am regularly building and testing 3 Linux versions and Win32 on two different machines.
I cannot see the slightest evidence for what you are describing.

well i just noticed ( reinstalling 1.60 to a new clean location ) that there are 8 (!) Saturn's moons having high resolution textures in the default celestia installation !!
That explains all , because i have a low-end PC

4096x2048 titan
4096x2048 tethys
4096x2048 rhea
4096x2048 iapetus
4096x2048 enceladus
4096x2048 dione

2048x1024 phoebe
2048x1024 mimas

i had them removed once upon a time thinking that i had them from the web without knowing that they exist in the default Celestia installation.
I have reinstall Celestia many times so those textures had been reinstalled and caused the lags.
Ok that problem solved

But you can easily chose from the menu whether you want to load and display low, medium or hires (4k) textures! You don't have to take these textures out of the distribution. Quite a few users don't have high-end PC's. They usually do what I wrote.
