Well, I'm pretty frustrated, right now. I wanted to grab snaps from Celestia to use as wallpaper. This wasn't possible with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (my OS) because it kept crashing all the time. Now, in Hardy Heron (Kubuntu, this time) with Celestia 1.5.0, Sol has no star texture. It's not just a simple case of not having the nonfree portion of the program installed (this version of Kubuntu pre-dates that silliness), and I've already tried the "error console" Celestia has built in. It displays errors with Earth, but Earth looks normal, Sol does not.
In short, I'm at my wit's end. Celestia on Windows ran very nicely, but I have yet for it to work correctly with Linux.
No texture for Sol

Re: No texture for Sol

(The error messages that you mention are a side effect of using an asterisk as a texture filetype in SSC files. It would be nice if those messages could be eliminated, but they are still present in v1.6)
That may be the one that's biting you.* Fixed bug that caused some stars to be drawn untextured
