My turn to have oddities using celestia with vista

I recently bought a new computer that has vista 64x and noticed a few minor problems right off.
When I run celestia in windowed mode the celestia display is shifted upward a bit so the top is cut off by the menu bar and there is a gap at the bottom of the window. I fixed this by setting my desktop theme to classic but the problem persists if I set the theme back to vista standard.

The other problem is the splash screen. When it loads the font showing what is being loaded becomes fat and transparent. You can't read what is being loaded because of it.

The graphics card is yet another ATI, a HD 3200 integrated. I plan on buying an NVIDIA card in the future but will have to make due with what I have for now. By the way, celestia runs pretty smooth considering I'm using an integrated graphics thingy.

I suspect these issues are because I'm using ATI but I didn't have them with my old card. If anybody has any ideas how I might correct them I appreciate it very much. :)

Oh yes, 4k textures or greater in jpg, png format come out black & white and with grooves in them.

This makes my antennae itch... :blue:

Reiko,

I would suspect your card again. I have *no* such problems on my Vista system.
Sorry.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

EDIT: What meant to say is that I have *none* of any of the problems you
listed in your posts above.

The splash screen problem is related to Vista itself, not your integrated ATI chipset.
(Think I have the same problem with my Nvidia notebook.)

About the problems of celestia in windowed mode.
What about your drivers?
Have you used Windows Update to make sure they are the most recent.
And something you should do, not only for Celestia but for all programs that work with OpenGL and also for Nvidia and Intel cards.
Get the most recent driver at the manufacturer website, ms tries to remove OpenGl code from all ATI, NVidia and intel graphics drivers.
(That is what ms is doing with "optimizing the size of the packages".)

Duds?

I have *no* problems with the splash screen, and my system can display 8k textures easily.
Just FYI...

I did do a full windows update as wells as get the newest catalyst drivers from ATI's website but the problems still persist.
The problem in windowed mode I was able to fix but running windows using the classic theme. But the splash screen problem is still there and textures above 2k display in black & white and look grainy.

Bob, do you think an Nvidia 9500gt would run celestia pretty good?

Well, you see what I'm using in my signature, and - again - I have *none* of the
problems you are referencing here.
Can't speak for the 9500, just that which I am using. But, everyone else seems
to love their Nvidia cards too, so I don't see how you could go wrong.

Of course, remember who you are talking to here too.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Careful else you will damage your antennae falling upside down.

Turns out Bob is right, it wasn't a vista problem. I just put an nvidia card in and everything looks normal again. :blue:
