Celestia and Windows 7

Hallo people! I`m using Windows 7 built 7077 on my computer and when I install Celestia win 2 1.5.1, I couldn`t see anythin, only a white screen. Can somebody help me? When I was running Windows XP on the same computer (the same graphic card) everything was O.K. Thanks! Roman

Roman,

You're the first person to report trying to run Celestia under Win7, so I fear all you're going to get are guesses.

To start with, what graphics hardware is in your computer and what drivers are installed?
Have you tried disabling 3D hardware acceleration to see what happens when just the software OpenGL is used?

Hello Roman.
I was just preparing a thread on Windows 7 and Celestia, so you anticipated me.
Never mind.
I'm one of the zillion beta testers of this OS, from it's first beta release at the beginning of this year, the 7000, till to the Beta 7106 I'm testing now, that will be published and available officially on May 5th, but is already available now for a reduced number of testers.
So I followed the many improvements release after release, and here are my latest personal results with Celestia and Seven.
Obviously the same could not happen to other people, due the different hardware configurations, but the comparison of three Windows OS under the same configuration may be of interest, IMO.
I wrote a small cel script, that brought to a series of approaches to ElChristou's ISS last release, from far away to very close, and used it with
Windows x86 XP SP3,
VISTA x64 SP1 and
Windows Seven x64 7106.
Here the worst results, i.e. the lower fps I obtained with the three OS under the same scenary:
Vista 11 fps
Windows Seven 32 fps
Windows XP 34 fps.
The results have been obtained with 1920x1200 pixel screen resolution at 32 bit colour depth, with each OS's latest Nvidia drivers (Windows Seven has its fresh own one, kindly released by Nvidia, given the enormous number of Win 7 testers. It's yesterday's 185.81 that exists in both x64 and x86 version, and you can find here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us chosing the correct one for your graphic card and the relevant OS ).
Dunno if they exist for ATI graphic cards too, sorry.
So, if we consider that both my Vista and Win 7 are x64, so using my 4 GB of RAM fully, we can see that both are lower in performance than XP, and Vista dramatically.
But, there is always a "but", we should consider too that both Win 7 and its related Nvidia drivers are beta, so probably not yet at their optimum, and for this reason I think now we have the Windows XP heir.
Regarding your problem, it looks very strange, I searched for it in some Windows 7 forum, but didn't find any.
My little cent: have you tried to uninstall and then install once again Win 7?
Perhaps the problem is in the installation.
Or perhaps it's in a corrupted file, so I suggest you to download 7 once again.
Moreover, Roman, what is your hardware?
Knowing it could surely help us to understand what happened.

Unless, of course, I *have* to because I buy a new machine that will only run the new system.

Well, IMHO this will occur in a short time, given the many many problems given by Vista, that yourself had for a long time.
This new OS has the characteristics that Vista missed to have, and this is well shown by the very short time between Vista and Win Seven release, about two years, while between XP and Vista there crossed seven years.
I don't know if you are happy from your Vista, but I'm ready to bit with you that when you'll try Seven you'll agree with me.
The example I gave in my previous post is clear: Seven gives thrice fps than Vista under the exactly same conditions.
This is an enormous improvement, and we are still at prerelease for both Seven and Nvidia drivers.
So I'm sure that in a short time we'll start posting about Celestia problems under Seven, instead of Vista's ones.

I would be interested in seeing how Celestia responds under Win 7 beta on my computer, but I don't know if, after installing Win 7, I will be able to revert back to XP if I desire to do that.

Could I degenerate to XP should the desire arise?

Hungry, IMO it would be preferable to have two partitions on your HD, with your XP in the "C" partition, and the "D" partition ready to accept whatever OS you would like to try.
This way you'll have both OS on your PC, and at PC start you'll have the possibility to start whatever you want of them.
I made it with Vista x86 and x64, and later on with Seven x86 and x64.
Obviously your HD needs to have enough space for this OS, but I checked for you just now, and Seven plus all the Celestia stuff I loaded in the same partition needs about 27 GB, not so big.
It's not difficult, believe me, if I've been able to do it anybody can easily do the same thing.

Danielj, you are probably right when you say that Vista major problems are related to Celestia.
I visit frequently many Windows forums, and most of people there are happy with Vista, even people that use it for 3D rendering, and this looks a bit strange, at least for me.
If this is true, what's the reason why Celestia is so much graphic power sucking?
Obviously I'm not speaking of a "normal" use of Celestia, but one with the biggest textures, models etc.

I just moved my old machine up to Debian Lenny (Gnome desktop), and I'm quite happy with it. I doubt I'll ever go back to Windows. I've a new machine in the works, but it will be Linux as well.
