Problem with textures

Post #1by Gskywalker » 22.04.2009, 20:28

Hi guys, I have a problem with the texture of the software at the current version 1.5.1
I followed all the instructions in the FAQ's and I've updated my graphic card driver to the latest version but the problem still remains.
Practically my problem is well showed in this picture:

The two different surfaces look like the Earth specular texture (yellow and black in your screengrab) plus the Earth's surface texture (blue and green). Celestia comes with them in the same surface texture file, earth.png: its alpha channel is used to store the specular texture. I'm wondering if this is resulting in some graphics confusion in your hardware.

As a test, you might try renaming Celestia/textures/medres/earth.png to be not_earth.png
and then copying Celestia/textures/medres/mars.jpg to Celestia/textures/medres/earth.jpg
(Celestia always selects the png image instead of the jpg image if both are there.)

Then when you restart Celestia, Earth should look like Mars. You may need to type capital R or lower case r several times to select the medres folder.

After you've done this, does the Earth look like Mars or is it messed up in the same way as now?

I did every step that you told me...but after selecting the "medres" the screen is still messed up as you can see in this picture:

Do you have any other suggestion?

Ouch.

How about Jupiter? what does it look like?
(one way to go to it is to type a 5 using the numbers above the main keyboard and then a G)

I think Celestia's Jupiter is the object with the fewest textures applied to it.

Three other things to try, all of which are mentioned in the FAQ:
1. switch to Basic render mode. Type a Ctrl-V several times until you see Basic (or the italian equivalent) flash on the screen. Does that help?

2. disable 3D hardware acceleration entirely. It'll be much slower, but does it look OK?

3. disable vertex shaders by editing celestia.cfg and removing the # which is at the start of the line
# IgnoreGLExtensions [ "GL_ARB_vertex_program" ]

Yes this helps a grat lot, now I see all the planets with the textures in the right way.
I checked the FAQ's but I really miss this one!!! Sorry.

Thank you very very much for your advice.

I'm glad to know that Basic works for you.
Does Multitexture work, too?

I am unhappy to have confirmed that there is an incompability with VIA graphics chips. Other people have had similar problems with them. I fear there may not be anything that can be done in Celestia. The author of Celestia's graphics code, Chris Laurel, will know for sure. He's not reachable right now, though.

Yes, Multitexture works well, so I can see also the dark side lights on earth for example.

For the rest, for me the program is spectacular as usual, but if mr. Laurel can fix the other problem in the new 1.6.0 version, it will be more spectacular.

Have you tried v1.6.0 RC1?

I don't think this kind of problem can be fixed easily.
If it isn't fixed in RC1, then it will probably have to wait until v1.6.1 or later. :(
The biggest known problem with RC1 is that some files are missing, but the program is OK.
