I also see this 1.5.0 in the splash screen. It is the right 1.6 subversion, though. The "About" message shows 1.6.0 (no subversion). I didn't have the time to check how the splash screen is generated. Perhaps there is something stuck in my VC++ project.

Reiko and Guillermo,

I'm seeing 1.6.0 in the splash screen on my 'clean' copy from SVN. If you want to check your version, you can find the string defined at the top of src/celestia/res/resource.h.

Checked. I re-downloaded the whole tree, and a fresh built gives the right splash screen. This will be reflected in my next executable (current svn is still 3701).

Someone will have to do the job because my "arty" preferences/reasons are not really interesting to Chris' eyes... (I mean his looking for more classical stuff kind the actual splash but different)
So if you have something, just post!

You mean the one picked by Fridger? (above)
It's fine, too conventional to my taste (I mean what else could we wait for from a soft like Celestia) but still fine...

As obviously there is consensus on this one, what we need now is a good uncompressed png version... Dhromed, still here? Fridger, do you have a png version?

A PNG version was never released. But if you always save with 85% quality, one will not see a difference to lossless png. For good text rendering with JPGs you must save with

Subsampling: 1x1,1x1,1x1 (best quality)
DCT method: floating point

Usually the defaults give much worse text rendering!
(the smallest file size you get with subsampling: 2x2, 1x1,1x1)

These options are in GIMP nomenclature.

The version I quoted above I got from him. I seem to remember it's somewhat bigger than what Dhromed displayed in the forum himself.

Mmhh.. Sorry Fridger, I don't get your point here with all this blabla about compression... :?
For the official splash I guess we need an artifacts free image and it's really not the case of the jpg here. More, to get the shadowing, we do need a png with alpha...
So seems someone need to get in touch with dhromed to get an original file...

As you sure know, JPG is a compressed, lossy format in principle. In practice -- and that's why JPG is so popular-- it is almost lossless, if treated correctly. I know all tricks of treating JPG well. I thought they might be helpful to you...

I know of course that you have to add an alpha channel. But that's entirely trivial. I thought I don't have to mention this even. Clearly the JPG will only make up the RGB part of the final RGBA in PNG format.

And here is how i fixed up my Celestia logo for when the program has started up. All i did here was add a blue glowing effect to it.

So what do you guys think?
