movie recording under linux

Dear Users List,

I've tried successfully to record sequence movies under linux :D .

Unfortunately, there is a stupid very little problem. When running movies,
a white edge appears around the movie.
The problem is that it is not closed ! The edge is present on the right, left and top,
but not at the bottom ! And it created an unpleasant effect.

a) How can I force the edge to be black ? It's probably easy to change that in the celestia
sources, that anyway, I have already re-compiled.

b) An other solution will be, instead of encoding a .ogg film directly on the fly, to save
images and create the movie afterwards. This will allow me to post-treat the images
and encode a movie with other tools.

Thanks in advance for your help,

yves

Dear John,
Thanks for your reply,

Here are the informations :

> can you tell us what distro of " linux" you are running ( Ubuntu,Fedora 10, Debain,? what? )
Linux version 2.6.27-11-generic

> and what version of celestia .A prebuilt for your distro or did you build from source - if so what version , was it from svn ?
celestia-1.5.1, donwloaded from the website (not the svn)
I've re-compiled the code (adding few changes, but the problems are not related to that)
for kde (qt-3)

what video card you are using and what driver ?
nvidia fx 3700, with the nvidia/ubuntu drivers

and what format of video are you trying to make, .ogg is default
ogg , 24 fps, quality=10, screen size = 2000x626.
With a smaller screen size the problems are similar.

I don't think its possible to generate a different format under linux.
If yes, please tell me how. The default ogg is not so good.

You can find movies examples (showing the problem) here : obswww.unige.ch/~revaz/public/celestia

Thanks for your help,

yves

Ok, I did different tests.
It seems that the problem is due to a vertical offset of the recorded image.

In this movie:
obswww.unige.ch/~revaz/public/celestia/film3.ogg

which is taken with the ubuntu binary distribution of celestia (kde or gnome ?) (using another computer and graphic card),
we clearly see that the Speed and FOV is cutted !Then, if there is an edge, the latter will also be cutted.

Ah !
In fact, I do understand now why I have edges !

I'ts because I've splitted vertically my screen .

Then I can re-formulate my question.
How can I remove or change the color of these edges and put them in black ? Where are these edges defined in the code ?
Event if the problem of the offset is not solved, I will at least be able to remove these edges.

Thanks in advance,

yves

In the Windows version of Celestia, there's a "Show Frame" selection in the View menu which turns split screen borders off and on.

I don't know if the same menu item is available under Linux.
