Version 1.6 has not been released yet. You can get a version quite close to the official 1.6 one by downloading the source code from the SVN archive and compiling it yourself. That's what we are mostly doing here... Since you left your OS unspecified (Win32, Linux, Mac OS??) I can't you tell more. If you are a Windows person, there are precompiled versions available here:

A similar activity exists for MAC OS:

You probably won't see any SVN updates since Cartrite's computer crashed a while back. He was kind enough to post the updates for us who know nothing about compiling source code.
You'll have to wait until the official release or until Cartrite gets his computer up and running again.

Out of interest what was the last revision number that was made available as a binary? I seem to recall someone else saying they were doing Win32 binaries but not sure about this?

Well since I do have Win32 compilation set up on XP and have space over at Celestial Matters I could provide the Win32 executable (assuming my Celestial Matters friends and cartrite in particular would approve of this)...

...alternatively it might be better to set up "unstable version" downloads on SourceForge.

Ihaven't had a win32 svn version available now for some time. My web sites are gone and I lost the last executable I did on my 200 gb IDE drive which I was not able to recover. I was able to get my old computer running about half way but I still haven't got a new drive so I can install Windows XP. Right now I'm only running Linux.

So anyone that wants to take over building win32 svn versions, well, I can't stand in anyone's way if I'm not able to do this anymore.
..............got my approval.
But phoenix has a link to svn executables in his signature, so I'm not the one to ask anymore.

Wow, I hadn't noticed Cartrite's problem. I can compile a w32 version every day and make it available at my page. I won't post every one, so please check here every day:

Celestia W32 executables from SVN

I will upload the first in a few minutes, I need to move from notebook to desktop to compile. (Edit: ready, tonight's version is already up and downloadable. If anybody finds it useful, just drop me a line, so I keep doing it.)

Guillermo,
I'm sure that many people would appreciate this offer.
Thanks very much for your help here.

Thanks also to Cartrite for doing what he did for us Brain-Dead
types. Hope you get the PC back up and running okay again.

Chris has had a new RC version at his website since yesterday. However, it does not seem to be working perfectly yet, since when launched, it is collapsing and showing an 14001 error code. Ah well, here is the link:

Ivvi,

It works fine for me.

Please specify the details of your hardware and software configuration, including graphics hardware and display device drivers.
I hope you didn't simply overlay it on top of your current Celestia installation. That'll certainly break things.

Configuration:
1GB 3.4GHz P4-550, Windows XP Pro SP3 + most recent MS patches
256MB Nvidia GF 7800 GTX, ForceWare v181.20
Celestia v1.6.RC0

Selden,

I also downloaded and ran the executable from above, and I also
had NO trouble getting it to work.

I did notice that there are two medres folders created by the setup
on my Vista system though. Easily fixed however. Just FYI...

I also copied ALL of my add-ons and textures from my SVN Celestia
version, and everything works just dandy. :D

Again, just FYI...

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Bob,

Where were the two different medres textures created?

I also installed the archive under XP. There was only ONE medres folder after the installation was completed.

The program structure ended up as C:\Program Files(x86)\Celestia\textures\medres\medres
and the second medres folder contained the actual textures themselves.

Was very easy to repair however, and it could very well be that my Vista system
caused the error.

Unfortunately, it sounds like bugs in the radeon driver. v1.6 uses more OpenGL V2 functions than v1.5.

You both might try running Celestia with a less demanding render mode.
As a test, please run the old version of Celestia, type a Ctrl-V until you see "Basic" flash on the screen, then exit and run the new version of Celestia. It'll start in Basic render mode and won't try to use v2 functions.

Does it still crash?

Yes

This is the newest version celestia-svn4690 which is not crashing for me, in every rendering mode. Even 160rc0 is not crashing, when its celestia.exe is overwritten by 4690 one.

I think that the error is caused by the fact that I built some of the libraries with MSVC 2008 and you don't have the the VC++ 9.0 runtime libraries installed on your system. I built Celestia itself with MSVC 2005 to avoid just the sort of problem you're reporting, but forgot to use the same compiler to make the support libraries.

I also have both versions of VS C++ installed, which would explain why it works for me.
