New Textures for Neptune, our sun (gstar) and tectonic Earth

Hi. I've designed three new textures that you may like. They are of Neptune (41 KB), our sun (a g spectral class star) and a tectonic earth (complete with plate boundaries). The textures are retouches of others found on the web or within the forum or both. I've attempted to make Neptune and the sun a bit more accurate.

Check them out.

I am setting up a website for file downloads. If you like them, please be patient. I hope to have the textures available within a few more days to a week. Alternatively, I can send them to anyone for posting, if they'll let me know.
Enjoy.

Obviously, I still don't know how to post pictures on the forum. I have a gallery at http://www.celestiaproject.net/celestia/gallery. I have photos in the gallery. Clicking on the photo brings up a large image of it with its own url. I clicked the Img button at the top of the post menu, then pasted the url, then clicked the Img button again.
No photo!!! Please help. What is the step by step procedure to post an image in this forum???

 :(

Anyway, here are the url's to the photos:

http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/gallery/view_ ... onic_Earth
http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/gallery/view_ ... ar_texture
http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/gallery/view_ ... ar_texture

the cursor seems to go behind [img] when you press the button. all you need to do is press img move the cursor in front of [img] paste the url then press img again. check the syntax when place the arrow over img and make sure yours follows it exactly.

I am no expert, but,
it seems to me that the original links that you pasted between the IMG tags were not to the actual pictures ( they were to php thingies instead!)
I can post your picture links (example at the bottom of this post) like this :

if you are using windows/IE, go to your site and right click on your picture, select properties and then view the "Address URL" which in the case of one of your pics is :-
    http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/albums/album07/Tectonic_Earth.sized.jpg

note that it ends in .jpg

I expect that you can now see what needs to be done,,,,

highlight and copy the url and then paste
and, put an IMG,,, using [ and ] square brackets before and after the IMG,,,
and similarly put a /IMG after it
or use the button and 'close tag' in the right places at the start and end of the url just like you did in the original post.

like this :
(IMG)http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/albums/album07/Tectonic_Earth.sized.jpg(/IMG) replacing the ( with [
and replace ) with ]
sorry for the confusion of ( and [ but it needs to be typed that way to read correctly without the forum messing it up !!
So you will then end up with this for example :
Image

To view the actual posted-code pretend that you are going to reply with quote to this post of mine and then you can view all what I have typed to make it happen.
Hope that helps ?

btw Nice tectronic ! I like it.

that's good news !
actually, I've had another look round your gallery and I see that you have already prepared thumbnail images, so here is another method of posting an image on the forum and making it a link to the larger image, (easier on people's bandwidth if you need to show lots of pics !! ),
basically, embed the thumbnail img between url tags that point to the larger image, like this :

(url=http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/albums/album07/Tectonic_Earth.sized.jpg)
(img)http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/albums/album07/Tectonic_Earth.thumb.jpg(/img)
(/url)
again I use ( instead of [ etc, so that it shows up in plain text !

thus :-
[url=http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/albums/album07/Tectonic_Earth.sized.jpg]
Image
[/url] click image to go to larger version.

Unfortunately a lot of the time Shatters.net's nameserver isn't available. Apparently this is a side-effect of a file sharing application using Shatters' gateway. (I don't think "sharing" is an appropriate way to describe what it does to the traffic, but never mind...)

Anyhow, the img links would be more reliable if you specified Ennui's numeric address instead of the name: 63.224.48.65

Also, don't forget that you can edit the eariler posts in this thread so they work. You don't have to keep adding new posts.

But the original links were just wrong . . . In this case, it had nothing to do with using the name instead of the IP address.

You had a couple of typos in your post, which exposed the forum-code.
and made the following link point all wrong !

After the first url and infront of the http you had a ], but it should have been =
like this url=http:\\ etc

and at the end of the first line after the .sized.jpg you had nothing but there should be a ]

HTH.

Chris,

You're right that the filesharing program isn't running now: traceroute has no problems getting through to http://www.shatters.net.
Unfortunately, the nameservice for ennui doesn't seem to be working for me, which causes a problem with the Gallery service. I'm getting a white background with black rectangles where the pictures should be on the index page and a "page cannot be displayed" when I try to access individuals' galleries.. :( It'd be nice if the gallery links ould be changed to be relative URLs instead of absolute ones containing the hostname. *sigh*

(p.s. I've now added ennui to the hosts file on my PC at home, which has fixed the problem for me.)

Corncrake,

A minor quibble: URLs use forward slashes (//) not Windows' back slashes (\\). Back-slashes only work when you're accessing a file on your local disk.

Drat, how embarrassing,,, to make a typo when correcting someone else's typos
Thanks for pointing that out Selden, you are quite correct of course. My excuse is that I refer the 'onerable members to a post I made earlier in which I gave the right slashes to include !!

Did you read Frank's first post in the thread ?
he said he would be setting up a website within a few days to a week and asked for patience.
Alternatively, to let him know and he can send them to anyone for posting,
so perhaps a PM to Frank with an offer of webspace might facilitate ??

Hi folks:

I want to thank you all for helping me on this thing. I think I've got the steps for posting thumbnails here in the forum, but I'm hesitant to try it out yet. I've got to assimilate it for a bit.

I'm curious about selden's comment that you can edit a prior post so that you don't have to post a new corrected version. That would be convenient. How do you do that?

Anyway, I checked with the person who is desigining my webpage and he said he's busy at work and it will be a few more days (maybe another week). If you like one of more of the textures, just e-mail me in the interim at fs.gregs@gte.net, and I'll send them to you via e-mail. I have then nicely zipped. It won't be a bother at all. Then, within a week, I hopefully will have the textures ready on my own website.

Regards,
Frank

I know the feeling, I am playing with a .3ds cube, but be*d*ned if I can uvmap it! I need to assimilate a higher intellect !

We may be in a cross-continent time warp here, I expect Selden will be along in a minute, meanwhile try :
when loged-in ( it wont work as a guest) look at any of your previous posts, in the top right you should see three buttons "edit" "X" (cancel) and
err, oh bother I've forgot the other one ,,, quote, is it ?
anyway,, press edit and have a play,, I dont think anyone will mind, we all had to start somewhere ! :D

Thinks ,, for Chris if he is watching ,, perhaps we need a sand-pit play-area, like on wiki-wiki for messing about in ?

(edit)
PS it sometimes helps the flow if you mark an edit(update) like this !
But now I am confused, when I came to edit this(above) post, I can only see two buttons, 'quote' and 'edit',,, the 'X' has vanished ,,, hmmm, perhaps I need another beer ! (end edit)

Yes Corncake I did. :?

This was a humorous atemp to say
"These file are great and I woudl like them as soon as possible Please."
(note the Smiley at the end of my post)

But I didn't think I would have to spell it out, for people. :?

and I didnt think I needed to spell out that I thought you might be able to offer him webspace ??!

I didn't see a smile ( :) ), I saw a wide open laugh. ( :D )
but if you meant a smile then that's ok, sorry.
But I didn't think I would have to spell it out, for people. :?
It is usually advisable to do so, (to avoid misunnestandings! since we are not all telepaths) , in fora and on usenetnewsgroups as emoticons are much devalued these days and in any case are a poor excuse for well written prose.

Which is all by-the-bye,
On the substantive issue of offering him webspace or of sending him an email you have remained silent, so I suppose you hadnt and didnt and anyway he has found some space of his own now and he hasnt !! so thisall is a waste of time and bandwidth !! titter,
have a good day,,
