Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
EDITED 5/7/09
Hi all:
Well, after over 40 hours of work over Xmas holidays, I am pleased to announce the release of a new add-on that showcases the beauty and ability of Celestia to take you into space, and into the future. The add-on will execute an approximate 10-minute animated script in two parts, meticulously choreographed to music played internally from within Celestia, that will take you on a wonderful journey to the 23rd century. High in orbit above Earth, you will witness and hear final preparations and then departure of the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk, as it leaves space dock and heads into space at warp speed to encounter an alien presence of enormous power. The preparation and departure sequences are loosely based upon scenes from the movie, Star Trek, the Motion Picture.
I promise that this add-on will be an exciting experience for you all. Choreographing complex celestial movements to music with Celestia scripts is a new opportunity to experience the cosmos even more dramatically than before.
This 165 MB add-on incorporates Star Trek models and textures assembled primarily by Fungun and Reiko. I thank them for their great assistance in making this add-on come to life. The add-on is sophisticated and employs 14 xyz custom orbit files, 16 separate spacecraft models, 102 textures, 3 ssc files, four scripts, three wav music/sound clip files and a customized version of Celestia known as Celestia151-ED.exe, which contains code to play sound/music files. Although the add-on will play on most computers, your system should have at least 512 MB of RAM, sound, a video card with at least 64 MB of Video RAM (128 MB or higher preferred) and a CPU of at least 1 GHz processing speed.
The add-on requires that you have Celestia version 1.5.1, Celestia151-ED or 1.6.0 installed on your system. If you do, it will add some files to your main directory. Nothing in that directory will be overwritten, so it is safe to install.
If you already have Celestia151-ED installed on your computer, install this add-on into that folder/directory. The enclosed copy of Celestia151-ED.exe, and its dll files can overwrite your existing files (they are the same files).
The add-on contains a fully functional copy of Celestia151-ED.exe, a custom version of Celestia 151, coded by Vincent as a service to the educational community, to enable Celestia to control and play sound and music. Celestia151-ED.exe must be unzipped into your main Celestia 151, 151-ED or 1.6.0 folder and will reside in that folder next to your regular copy of Celestia.exe. To use this add-on, you MUST launch Celestia151-ED.exe first, by clicking on its icon. I repeat ... your MUST launch Celestia151-ED.exe first. Once it is launched, pull down the "file" menu, select "scripts", and open one of the three scripts that accompany this add-on. They should be present in the "scripts" folder inside your Celestia 151 main directory.
The main script is titled, "StarTrek-Sound-combined.cel". When launched, it will play the entire 10 minute add-on to music. I recommend you launch this script. The other scripts are subparts of this main script.
When you first launch any of the scripts, Celestia151-ED will attempt to draw and load the many models and textures employed in the add-on. Depending upon the power of your computer system, the first time it does so, there will probably be a lot of pauses, stutters and stops, as one large texture loads after another. Because of this, your initial viewing of this add-on may be disjointed and it may not sound well timed to the music. I strongly recommend that you launch and play the script through fully once, so that all textures and music files load. When it is done, press the [Esc] key to end the script, then RELAUNCH IT without closing Celestia151-ED. It will now play much smoother. The 2nd viewing will give you the full benefit of the script's timed choreography to music.
The add-on takes place high above Earth. I recommend you use your high-resolution textures for Earth, to enjoy maximum visual beauty. To load them, launch Celestia 151-ED, then press the [Shift+R] keys to set rendering to "high res textures".
For maximum enjoyment of the add-on, turn off your screen labeling by pressing the [V] key until no text is visible. Set ambient light to about 0.1, by pressing the { } bracket keys. Set star magnitudes at about 9.0, using the [ ] bracket keys.
Before you run this add-on, make sure you read the read-me file accompanying it. It gives tips on how to best get the music to play.
The add-on has been placed on my website. Here is the download link to it: http://fsgregs.startlogic.com/Public_Files/Enterprise_spacedock.zip.
Here is a screenshot from it.
EDITED: I have also now put a high res video of the add-on onto my site. Click here to view it. http://fsgregs.startlogic.com/Public_Files/Enterprise1.wmv
Enjoy. I welcome your comments.

Truly a beautiful piece of work, Frank.
I'm not a Star Trek fan - as you know - but I'll keep this piece of work just to wow myself
from time to time.
Thanks a lot, Brain-Dead

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
This has the be the most fantastic addon I've seen in celestia. Thank you for making this! Brilliant!
Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Cool
You finished it .
Alas, now if only I could see it There's no way I could run this on my system (I really need to get a new compter) I may have to get my son to put it on his system.
Can a video of this be made?
Thanks
Tim

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Reiko and Bob:
I'm so glad you liked it. It took lots of work.
Tim: I am making a youtube video of it to music. The problem with Youtube, however, is the small resolution they demand. I have to change all the FOV's in the script to view the add-on from further away, so that everything fits into a smaller window. Then I have to add the music manually and mesh it all together. I am working on making the video, so you will have some opportunity to see it then ... but it really shines only in full screen in Celestia. Time to get that new computer!
I just finished assembling my own new Windows computer today. Celestia's high-res scenes are running at 75 fpi If you want details on what I bought, let me know.

Frank, I would appreciate some details on your new computer. I'm planning on getting a new one here in the next couple of months or so. I want it specifically for celestia to work smoothly on.

Frank,
An absolutely brilliant piece of work, the music really makes the difference.
I tried it with 1.6 but the error message do not recognise 'play' appeared commenting out then let it run.
Definetly run best with 1.5.1 ed

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Here is just a small clip and not the whole thing. Keep a couple of things in mind before watching it. I had to use a 3rd party software to capture the video and sound. Unfortunately it doesn't like Celestia much so it slowed the fps down significantly. Also, I'm not sure the audio synced like it's supposed to. I have a hard time judging anything to do with audio.fungun wrote:Cool

Reiko:
The video plays well. The audio is OK also.
Strange ... I tried using Fraps to record the video and it stopped recording about 1 minute into the scene. Kept doing it. I don't know why??? Did you have the same problem?
Anyway, I have recorded the same scenes using Celestia's own movie record, but the scene is tightly narrowed by the video size. I will be attempting to combine it with music.
If anyone uses a screen capture video maker beside Fraps that can capture high frame rates, or can tell me how to get Fraps to record through to the end, please let me know.
Thanks

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Are you using a shareware version of Fraps? If so, then your recording time is restricted and accounts for the cut off. The full version removes that restriction but isn't free.fsgregs wrote:Reiko:

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Frank,
I suspect the reason you are suffering a narrowed scene is that you are not resizing the Clestia window.
When you capture at for example 640x480 Celestia draws a red outline of the video capture size. What you MUST do before hitting F11 is manually resize the Celestia window (by dragging the corner with your mouse) until it exactly fits to the red lines (or near enough will do).
Then reset your FOV to what ever you want, and hit F11.
CC
PS. This all assumes WINDOWS... DUNNO WHAT THE OTHERS DO.
PPS. Make sure you use a nice codec like XVID.

Ah, yes! I am using the free shareware version of Fraps. That explains it!
Oh DUH!!!! I am sooooo stupid! I never thought of that
Thanks for the tip. I will give it a try.
P.S. - Have you tried the add-on yet?

No. I've got about 50MB left on my broadband allowance this month. If I exceed it before the renew date, speed drops to 64Kb/s for the remainder of the month. I still have a week to go, so I must pace myself.fsgregs wrote:P.S. - Have you tried the add-on yet?

Wow,
do ISP's still sell anything BUT flatrates in the US?? Here, volume based rates are not available anymore (only for mobile phones).

Re: Enterprise Leaving Spacedock - choreographed to music
Frank. I installed just now your addon and... well, I can only say "wonderful"!
Using your addon I went back many years ago, when I was seeing for the first time that old, nice movie , so this has been a very beautiful experience, thank you.
Tomorrow morning a good number of young students will appreciate it, just like I'm doing myself.
Well done, my friend.
BTW, Frank, would it be possible to have the music without voices, substituting them at the correct times with "print" command lines?
This in order to avoid problems to the many people that don't understand English.
Just a thought.
Bye
Andrea

Andrea:
Thanks for the compliments. I am soooo glad you and your students are enjoying the add-on. It really does bring Celestia even more to life!!!
The voices are present in music file 2 only. They are sound clips I added to the music using a free audio program called "Audacity". It is really a neat program. I can provide you just the music file without the voices, but it is large and I will need to either place it on my website to provide you a link to download it, or FTP it to you directly. Unfortunately, it is now on the computer I disconnected, when I installed my new one. I will be re-booting that old computer sometime this weekend, so I can probably upload the music file only to my website in the next day or two. I'll then send you the link.
Alternatively, you can get the music file yourself via the web. If you have "Youtubedownloader" software on your system, you can grab the music from a youtube video involving the leaving drydock scene. Here is the link to that video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JLM6dzzQL4
Launch it, and use youtubedownloader to copy only the music part of the video. Save it as an mp3 file, then convert it to a wav file using Audacity.
Let me know what you prefer.
In either case, you will need to place the new file in the "sounds" folder of the add-on and either change it name to "leaving_drydock3.wav" or edit the "play" command in the script to play a different file name. You can then also add a print command in the script for anything you wish, as well as edit the existing print commands into Italian. You will have to play with timing of the print messages, however, since the music plays tightly to time.

I've never downloaded anything with Youtubedownloader, dunno even if it's a free or paid service.
So I searched and found it’s a pretty freeware that allows to download videos from YouTube, and if needed to transform them in other video formats or extract from them the audio track only.
I did it, and now I have a nice MP3 file, ready to be transformed in WAV.
To help me in this, can you please inform me of the original WAV characteristics, so I'll be able to (partly) restore the sound quality, if possible, transforming MP3 back to WAV?
I'm not in a hurry, so please take your time.
Thanks a lot once again, Frank.
