Celestia 1.6 Translations
Celestia 1.6 is in an advanced phase of development, and it is now possible to contribute to the translation of the new strings that
were added. Since Christophe Teyssier's site has been down for months, I've added a Celestia i18n page to the Celestia wikibook.
There you'll find some information about how to create/get/complete the .po files which contain all the strings that need to be
translated. It also shows a general overview about the translation of Celestia in the different available languages.
I've already sent an email to existing translators, but several were rejected because of undeliverable addresses. So either
if you are a translator or if you would like to contribute to the translation of Celestia in your language, please visit the
Celestia i18n page on the Celestia Wikibook.

Re: Translating Celestia 1.6
Hi Vincent,
that is good news that you took that task over. I have none the less a couple of questions.
Are you also going to track the translation of the other files (i.e. controls, guide.cel ...)?
And the translation of the new help file (once it is finshed and ready to be translated)?
Best regards,
Guckytos

Merci Vincent
I give a try at the latest SVN version of Celestia.
Most of the displays are translated but not the command list.
An other point is that le localized start_fr.cel does not start when the application begins.
Though, the translated files are actually in my locale folder.
What happens?

Thanks for pointing out this issue. I'll soon commit an easy fix for it.
Actually, Christophe Teyssier already fixed it in v1.5.1 but for some
reason, the change was lost during the 1.5.1 branch merge.
Meanwhile, you can simply move these files from the 'locale' folder to
the celestia base folder.

That's a good point! I'll add these files to the 'Celestia translation overview' section ASAP.
I'll also add .po files that concern constellation names since some of them still need to be completed.

Very quick fix!
After having broken my installation with hazardous maneuvers, il works perfectly.
And now, is it possible to have a complete version of Celestia speaking Verlan for yesterday ?

More seriously, the first name of Solar System objects is the only one that is translated so far.
That means that Celestia displays, e.g., 'Lune / Earth I' when selecting the Moon using the french locale.
Would non-English speaking users prefer the translation to apply on all the names, e.g., 'Lune / Terre I'?
I need to know this quite soon since it would require some change in the po file update process and
also in the Celestia overlay code...

Re: Translating Celestia 1.6
Hi Vincent,
one other comment on the files that can be translated. Which one of the many files describing the keyboard commands is THE official one and up to date?
I just took a look into SVN and found these files:
Some were updated recently other were a longer time dead. I know for sure that in 1.5.1 controls was the most actual one, while now it seems to be another. And controls.txt was the one we translated to german for 1.5.1
Please some take a look at this mess and clean it up into one (comprehensive) one.
Regards,
Guckytos

Actually, the only one which is translated so far is control.txt.
It is also the only one which is displayed within Celestia, via the 'Help' menu.
I'm not sure whether this makes it be the 'official' one, though...
Then, I agree that all this needs some serious cleaning up. I personnaly don't have
the time at the moment to dig into these different files to find out which one is the
most up-to-date. If somebody is willing to have a closer look at this, please do so
and we would be really happy to clean this up for once.

Re: Translating Celestia 1.6
Hi
For me it seems logical to translate all the names, including subsidiary ones.
As regards the keys assignment, I am ready to examine the files and test to see witch is the most up to date.
cheers.

Re: Translating Celestia 1.6
Hello
Here is the result of my investigations:
It seems obvious that the controls.txt file witch is currently in use is a survivor of the previous versions.
The file KbdMouseJoyControls.txt is more complete and has a better look. I think that this file should replace the controls.txt. Although it is not already complete. The shortcuts E, M, and P for globulars, minor moons and dwarf planets are missing. And it appears that the R/r shortcut is no longer in use in Celestia. With these corrections I think that it could serve as a base for the next controls help.
The file CelestiaKeyAssignments.txt is not really a help file but only a file for complete reference in witch all keys and keys combinations are listed, even if they are not used. Here too, the same shortcuts are missing.

Hi jogad,
that's interesting news. I know for sure that for the translation of 1.5.1 "controls.txt" was the most actaul one, while "KbdMouseJoyControls.txt" hadn't seen an update for > 2 years.
Now the situation is more or less the other way round.
So, with your comparison you are sure that all commands from "controls.txt" are included in "KbdMouseJoyControls.txt"?
If this is the case, then I would vote to get rid of "controls.txt", so that this situation is cleared and everyone knows which file to translate.
If it is not the case (yet), could you compile a new "KbdMouseJoyControls.txt" with all commands in and then send it to Vincent for validation and upload to SourceForge. Followed by deletion of "controls.txt".
Would seem like a very good idea for me.
But that are just my 2 cents.
Regards,
Guckytos
Re: Translating Celestia 1.6
Hi
Yes Guckytos. I confirm that in the current SVN version, there are no more commands in controls.txt than in KbdMouseJoyControls.txt. The only drawback is that this last file has a good appearance in a text editor with a monospace font but not in Celestia where a proportional font is used (MS Sans serif size 8 for Windows). There is a little effort of presentation to do, possibly different for each country. And for instance I am not sure that fonts used for each OS give the same results. But the content is easy to update.

Of course they will prefer the translation to apply on all the names,
that's why they are called non-English speaking users.

The translation files have been updated.
Translators can download the revised version of .po files from the Celestia i18n page of the Celestia Wikibook.

The change that extends localization to alternative names of ssc bodies has not been checked in SVN yet.
I submitted it to the devs list a few days ago. That's why the first name is the only one translated in the
current SVN build.

Re: Celestia 1.6 Translations
Quite a few translators have already completed their localization of Celestia 1.6.
In some other languages, the localization is nearly complete (90-95%), so only a
few new strings still need to be translated. I've not been able to contact some of the
translators though. So, if anybody is willing to help here -- the localization process
is pretty easy -- I'd be happy to help. The Celestia i18n page on the Celestia Wikibook
is a good start.
