I've been promoting Celestia as a means of producing starfield backgrounds for use in 3D rendering, indeed I've used it for that purpose myself.

However one of my correspondents on the Renderosity forum has asked whether this usage is legitimate. Since Celestia is open source freeware, I had assumed it would be - but to be sure, I though it best to ask since I can't find any specific mention of it.
Terms of use for Celestia's output?

Re: Terms of use for Celestia's output?
I believe that this is fine as long as proper credit is given.
By the way, I had thought that *I* was English Bob...
I was born in Cambridge, England in 1953. You are from Cambridge?

My impression was that if it's part of the default distribution you're ok, if it incorporates content from an add-on you have to get permission from the add-on's creator.

Celestia's output: eg the screenshots and movies and models you make with the default are actually your intellectual property.
They are not covered by the license.

Re: Terms of use for Celestia's output?
Thanks everyone! I'll pass on your comments. Seems fair enough. 3D artists are sadly used to seeing their output ripped off, so most of them are quite careful when it comes to copyright and stuff.
I was born in 1953 too. Does that mean I must be you?
I was born oop North, actually. Mrs. Bob was born in Cambridge, and we lived there for a while. Now we're a bit more rural, but still in Cambridgeshire. I reckon that's close enough for the Interwebz.

That cubeworld is really neat looking. You should make it into an addon.

You have to be... I obviously have more hair though. Hee, hee.
Welcome, and I hope you understand all of the answers you'll get here.
Generally, we're happy if credit is given. Simple as that, but - as you mentioned -
things are rarely so simple in the world.
Take care, Brain-Dead Bob

Sure, I get it. Very similar to the usual terms of use in our corner of the 3D art world - read the readme if there is one - give credit where it's due - don't assume anything - and if in doubt, ask.

Thanks Reiko - it isn't mine to redistribute, unfortunately. (Talking of giving credit... ) I made it out of the Dystopia City Blocks by Moebius87 and Jon Lynn, which used to be in the Renderosity freestuff. I note they're no longer there, in fact I think an improved version is now on sale at one of the online stores.

Weeelll... Your avatar has more hair than my avatar. That doesn't mean we'd recognise each other in the street.
Thanks again for the kind welcome, everyone!
