I absolutely love Celestia. I've only used it for a short time but seeing the planets, asteroids, etc and their orbits play out is absolutely amazing. I'm a teacher and hoping to use it in the classroom.
But I have a question.
Are the solar system textures supposed to be included? I have beautiful textures for Earth, Saturn, the Sun and some moons, but when it comes to Jupiter, Mercury, the Earth's moon and many other planets there is no texture. Mars is slightly redish and Neptune is slightly bluish =P But there are no textures.
During the demo it points out a crater on Mimas, a moon of Saturn, but there's no texture to show it! =P
It's just a plain grey sphere getting light from the sun.
I'm running ubuntu 8.10.
This is the case on both Gnome and GLUT versions.
Are there supposed to be textures I'm missing? Is there some place I can download textures? Is it my machine? =/
Thanks in advance (^_^)

Re: Jupiter and other textures missing?
They should be there. You might need to update your graphics drivers.

Re: Jupiter and other textures missing?
Thanks for the quick response! (^_^)
I tried a less recent driver but had the same result.
Can you tell me the name of the texture for Jupiter or Earth's moon? Or another?
I'm looking in my textures folder and this is all I have:

Re: Jupiter and other textures missing?
you're missing LOTS of textures. But you didn't tell us which version of Celestia you were using!
Here is e.g. the content of the medres folder in the latest (SVN) version:
You see, of course jupiter is also there.

Re: Jupiter and other textures missing?
You can download a generic Linux version of Celestia v1.5.1 from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=21302
Among other things, it includes a full set of lores and medres planetary surface textures.
It sounds like the version that you downloaded for Ubuntu had a lot of stuff left out.
Be sure to complain loudly about that to the site where you got it.

Re: Jupiter and other textures missing?
Thank you for your replies!
I had originally downloaded it from ubuntu's Add/Remove menu.
I went into Synaptic Package Manager and found that I had:
celestia-common
celestia-gnome
but I didn't have:
celestia-common-nonfree
(This package contains the data files for Celestia that have no DFSG
compatible license or an unclear license.)
I downloaded that, and now all of the textures are in place!
Thank you everyone for your help! (^_^)/

Re: [Solved] Jupiter and other textures missing?
Ah. So it appears the Ubuntu package maintainers decided to break Celestia in Intrepid. Supplying users with a partial install is stupid - if they have problems with the licenses they should have moved the entire package to nonfree.
