confused!

Post #1by billybob884 » 28.01.2003, 03:31

I've actually been pondering over this one for a little while, but never thought to put it on the forum till now; anyway, why are there three different folders in the textures directory? I know each is for a different resolution, but, here, for example, if you had a file called mars.jpg one in each folder, each one a different resolution, which would celestia read? Or would it combine them all to make one texture? I guess the point i'm trying to make is, why isn't there just one folder for all textures? I really don't see the point in splitting it up when you can just rename it to mars4k.jpg and mars 8k.jpg. Granted, a lot of models would have to be fixed to accomidate this, but wouldn't it be better in the long run to get it done now befre there are too many models out there?

I would think that it would be easer ,from a programing stand point, to use the hires, medres, lores at the top of the code tree than to find ALL the instances of the texture being called and to be able to change them on the fly
---with (shift-r) (r) the directory at the top of the tree only neads to be changed .

this is only a gess so if i an wrong ?

Hey cris or rass or somebody why is it and anyway billybob you probly know more about the software than i do .

as for knowing a lot about celestia, i think theres still a lot i don't know. but my point of this topic was just to suggest the change from 3 texture directories to 1

when Celestia loads it loads any textures from the medres directory first
them from any other if there isnt one in the medres directory

as for the three folders
I like having three

all my main textures are in medres
all my starwars textures are in the lowres directory
and any overly large textures are in the hires directory
and I switch to them if i need to

but I did put up a post a while ago asking chris if we could have multiple texture load from the ssc file

IE:
"Earth" "Sol"
{
texture1 "earth4k.dds"
texture2 "bigearth.jpg
texture3 "Earthtopo.dds"

and then switch between them useing the function keys, (F1,F2,F3 to F12)
Texture1 would load by default, then swith between what you want to view.

With 3 tex folders i am able to change venus _clouds and bump, and tex and bump

Venus with and without clouds and be able to use differant bump maps for each using [shift+r],[r]

If eney one wants to check out my venus just download it from my site

veuus(.png).zip or Venus(.dds).zip --but i am having problems with dds and bumpmaps so the .dds zip has in it a .png bumpmap

texture folders

John is correct. Three folders allow one to use a variety of textures. As John said, you can go from clouds to surface. You can also use a lower res planet texture with clouds and a higher res without. We (OK, I) do not all have high end systems or graphics, switching is an alternative. You can also switch between Red Mars and Blue Mars, Normal and whatever..
