Need some opinions on lighting effects

Often in star trek you see a spotlight illuminating sections of the hull with the ship's name and registry. I've been having trouble recreating that look and could use some advice.

Here is what I have done so far.

The problems I'm having is aligning the spotlight properly and not have it overexpose the sections of the hull it's closer to.

The second picture looks neat. The first one, I question whether the light should be visible at all. Star light is usually pretty bright. Much brighter than any spotlight.

This is a texture effect. I can't have it not work in sunlight. :(
