Help is on the way.
Hi. You are not alone in not understanding how to use Celestia and how to change, modify and use graphic files and data files in Celestia. To address that need, a User's Guide is now under development. It should be ready in about 3 -4 weeks. It will explain all!
In the meantime, open your Celestia "Data" folder and locate the file that is named "solarsys.ssc". Open that file using MS Wordpad (use the windows Start button, then Programs, Accessories, Wordpad). When open, you will find entries that name a specific texture for each planet (e.g. - Texture "Earth.png".) That line must be changed to read the name of your new dds texture (e.g. - Texture "Earth.dds"). That should do it. Try it out and if it doesn't work, e-mail me at fs.gresg@gte.net.

dimensionidol,
You didn't tell us what kind of videocard you are using. If you only have a 16meg card in all likelyhood your not going to be able to use those .dds files. I am not sure if .dds files work with TNT based cards. Maybe someone can chime in with the answer to that question as I don't have a TNT to test with. If you have an S3 based card you may have a 50/50 chance of getting them to work just keep to the smaller .dds files. Good luck.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.
Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.
