Ras' (and others),

Unfortunately, the Internet today is a very hostile environment. Windows and Linux systems especially are under constant attack by "script kiddies" and professional hackers. We see several network scans every day that probe all of our systems to find out what kind they are and what software they're running. There are constant attempts trying to take advantage of all the known security flaws -- many of which haven't been publicised yet. :( Servers run by individuals usually don't have much of a chance against them.

p.s. older versions of the firmware used in Linksys routers and the Norton firewall software, too, have several well known security flaws. You have to make sure you constantly keep up with all their security patches.

Not recommended unles you use Nortons security corporate edition firewall or a linksys router...or the like...generally peeps will leave you alone...but not me it seems

Nortons does not work on my machine (Linux), but fortunately also those "hyperactive" Porn queens usually do not have a chance of "performing" either;-)

Remember also: firewalls are /standard/ in Linux, no reason to buy anybody's firewall soft...

I suspect Ras' is still more than a little upset about having to shut down his forum server. I'm guessing it got, umm, abused.

Nah it wasnt...but it came close...

As far as those kinds of people...all I have to say is they are surely the most ignorant monkeys to ever peel a banana...All of them have an IP address showing up on my firewall...One is 12.254.241* or 12.249*...Someone trying to be smart in masking his IP I suppose...Its the same user...No matter I have a few calls to make

Also theres this one who is a DSL user: 63.218.244* this one changes periodically...Granted its not IP translation at work...That scrambles it better than this...These guys arent even real hackers...And I probably have nothing to worry from these morons...

There is however those who do know what thier doing and untill I have better equipment why bother? Oh well Im sort of getting sick of the online world anyways...with all the stalkers, internet psychos with no life who have nothing better to do than stalk innocent peeps and ruin thier lives...why? because its fun  garbage...thats all these peeps are...But thats another story...

I come here...I work on Celestia...and maybe when I have the money to blow on the equipment Ill run a decent server...dunno Im still wondering if its worth it...I suppose chris has taken some precautions of his own...He seems to be not having issues...atleast none Im aware of...

Oh well...fido...

Ras',

You shouldn't assume that the systems that the probes are coming from belong to the people trying to hack your system. Usually the owners of those computers are victims themselves who don't realize that their systems have been hacked and are being used to break into other sites. Most "hacking" scripts go through several intermediate systems before attacking the intended victim :(

True but thats the ISP's problem...They should be able to track the problem...I am thinking that these monkeys arent smart enough to use someone elses IP address...They havent gotten in and done any damage...yet...This is more of a http probe and a tcp port probe...most of those are kids playing around thinking thier being sly...Blackice reports that even on thier site...

http://www.iss.net/security_center/advi ... Firewalled

I mean the random probe I dont bother with but when I start getting 21 hits in a minute...each 10 minute in a birage all night...with 20+ reports from the same user its a call for concern...

I try to keep to date with the latest patches--that's the most important thing to do when running a Linux server. I did get hacked about six months ago though . . . I had to bring shatters.net down for a couple days and reinstall an updated version of Linux. I also used the downtime to upgrade the CPU, mainboard, and graphics :>
