im trying to transform a normal map to a bump map (celestia related), ive found this tutorial but ive been unable to follow the steps:

Why would you want to do THAT??

Celestia always calculates internally with normalmaps NOT with bumpmaps. If you assign a bumpmap in the solarsys.ssc file, it's read by Celestia and internally converted to a normalmap!

Oh the bump map isnt to be used by celestia for rendering, its to be used as a tool for making textures for celestia.

becouse with a bump map by playing with contrast and brightness i can work out waterlevels/ coverage, but i cant do it with a normal map.

Strictly speaking, what you want is a height map. The idea is the same, but avoids the mental anguish. :-)

Supposedly CrazyBump will do this. It's a commercial product, though, and I haven't tried it. http://www.crazybump.com/

Ive tried crazy bump but the problem is that it gives me a map with a light source (so it has shadows and highlights), and it wont process mormal maps of 16k.

I've seen some postings which claimed the Nvidia's nvdxt used to have this functionality. I dunno if it still does.
