hi bob i do know vista is a bit diff. but as to
1. There is NO option available in my Nvidia Control Panel to automatically update the drivers as was indicated on the Nvidia web site.
i was not referring to a nvidia update but the "MS Windows " auto update . incase there was some confusion .
If I try an automatic update (via the Vista Control Panel and Device manager), Nvidia displays errors after about 15 minutes of attempting to install the new drivers automatically.
as selden said the wizard is usless
The error messages I get tell me to go to my hardware vendor in order to download the latest drivers for my machine
that says to go to nvidia
for the Gforce 8400,vista 32bit

This simply cannot be used after an update is received from HP.
If I do use an (optional) graphics update from Microsoft, it simply destroys whatever I just installed from HP.

So it seems...

In fact, my problems all seem to lie within HP's domain. I finally worked up the nerve to uninstall my Nvidia graphics drivers. Then I tried to get the very latest version of these drivers from HP, which I did. And, finally, I installed the very latest Nvidia drivers from HP. What I ended up with was the exact same copy of the forceware that I had had previously. In other words, I am stuck at 169.60. Everything else was updated though, and I now have (apparently) the latest Nvidia Unified Graphics Drivers. These are still at 169.60 for the forceware though.

Here's what I see when I investigate:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)

    GPU processor: GeForce 8400 GS
    ForceWare version: 169.60

    Dedicated video memory: 256 MB
    System video memory: 0 MB
    Shared system memory: 1279 MB

To Hell with it... If it is this damned difficult to update my drivers, then I just will not do it.
Had enough for today, but thanks for the tips.

Did both, with NO joy... Just FYI...
You also mis-read what I wrote above. I DID NOT SAY "I do use an (optional) graphics update from Microsoft," I said

well lets let it lay .I was just wondering why double clicking on the nvidia driver "175.19_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe " in safe mode after uninstalling all other video drivers wasn't working

Okay John...

I finally got it done. Only took me six damned hours to figure out how to do it on this piece of crap HP machine, but I did it.

The main problem was the actual uninstalling of the old drivers. The first time I did this, it took over 20 minutes to execute. There was also no uninstaller included in the Nvidia package, so I used the Control Panel to uninstall the drivers, Next, I ran the sp37331.exe file you described above. No joy, and no changes, and no driver updates although it did (for whatever reason) change a lot of "black-box" marked Nvidia options to the "green-check" marked options.

The next time I tried it, I used the 175.19_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe file. This did not work either, but I found that - if I physically deleted each and every Nvidia folder on my machine prior to executing this file, it finally worked correctly.

Just so you believe me, see below:
    [Display]
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (2394 MHz)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)

    ForceWare version: 175.19
Total available graphics memory: 1535 MB
    Dedicated video memory: 256 MB
    System video memory: 0 MB
    Shared system memory: 1279 MB
    Video BIOS version: 60.86.42.00.39
    IRQ: 16
    Bus: PCI Express x16

    [Components]

    nvCplUIR.dll 1.5.30.49 NVIDIA Control Panel
nvCpl.cpl 1.5.2400.14 NVIDIA Control Panel Applet
    nvExpBar.dll 1.5.2400.14 NVIDIA Control Panel
    nvCplUI.exe 1.5.2400.14 NVIDIA Control Panel
nvViTvSR.dll 7.15.11.6960 NVIDIA Video and TV Server

    nvGameSR.dll 7.15.11.6960 NVIDIA 3D Settings Server
    nvGameS.dll 7.15.11.7519 NVIDIA 3D Settings Server

This was a REAL learning experience, so thanks for your help. I know I sound angry here, and I believe that I am angry. There ain't no way an update should be this damned difficult to get accomplished. All this time, I thought that my HP updates were including new Nvidia drivers because the install process said that new Nvidia drivers were being downloaded. Last one was approximately 60.5 MB.

Sorry for my mood, but this thing has really pissed me off today.
Thanks very much for your help though. Much appreciated.

glad to see it works. Uninstalling the PREinstalled stuff can be "fun" , so next time it will only take 15 min.
just keep a look out for windows update and i guess hp update also ,so that they don't reinstall there drivers . That will only happen when they have a newer one than you . then when you see the driver in the update list just don't install that one , and go and get the real one .

hi Hank Cotman have you read through the entire thread
for bob's card this was the page to look at and get the driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x ... _whql.html
and the user guide
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/1 ... _Guide.pdf
i would also recommend removing the Microsoft OpenGL disabled driver first

An update on this process from 'Ol Brain-Dead as of Friday, October 7, 2008...

This time, while making certain that I followed John and Selden's advice from the above posts,
I managed to upgrade my Nvidia drivers (and add some neat tools) in approximately 30 minutes.
Downloaded both 178.24_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe and 6.03_nvidia_system_tools.exe.

First, I uninstalled the Nvidia Drivers via my Vista Control Panel.
Second, I deleted any folder on my machine which was part of the existing Nvidia installation.
After the uninstall, I did a system reboot.

After that, I executed the 178.24_geforce_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe file.
Next, rebooted again.
Next, ran the tools file (6.03_nvidia_system_tools.exe) and finished with another complete
reboot.

Very easy this time, and no problems except for some confusion on my part concerning the
new tools. These are actually kind of nice though. They will allow you to set up your machine
so that you can adjust the Nvidia drivers to deliver either quality, or speed, or both.

Very happy Brain-Dead Bob here now, and many, many thanks to John and Selden for the
aforementioned advice. I returned to this topic from my Celestia web page where I had been
at least smart enough to leave a link to this topic because I just knew I was going to need it
again. :)

I am very fortunate here...
I simply do not install any "Optional" updates, which is where the drivers are located for my Vista machine.
Again, though, thanks for the advice.
Much appreciated here.

Just FYI...
The Optional Updates include the MS graphics drivers and updates for both Nvidia GeForce
8400 and another MS offering called "SilverLight" if I recall correctly.

I also use Open Office of course.
Remember too, that I'm using Vista, so this could explain the discrepancy.

Thanks, Bob

Don't use MyUninstal -
Use "Add/Remove Programs" from the control panel.
Nvidia is listed there, use the official way and it will be removed correctly.
Then reboot.
Check whether the driver is really not active (in case of XP, the windows move very slow, in case of Vista: no transparency effects, but the windows move still fast since Vista uses VBE 2.0 by default, XP uses VBE 1.1).
Only if the driver is really not active, then install the latest driver from Nvidia for your card.
There is also one more possibility: Your card may be defective or overheat, and the change from 1.4.1 to 1.5.1 exploit the bug or defect or triggers the overheating of your card. I've seen such rare effects at work (Computerservice shop). Check the temperature of your card, or If the card is under warranty try to exchange it or contact your computer maker.
