But the 8800 GS is much faster than the 7600 GT.I could see it in 3D Mark 2003,2005,2006,Judge Dredd:Dredd vs Death,X-2:The Threat benchmark and Tomb Raider Legend demo with next gen content on.So,it?s a program specific related problem.Even more strange,in Celestia itself,I don?t have anymore slowdowns in scripts and even models like Hubble and ISS runs smoothly.Orpheu med res also runs smoothly. However I have issues concerning Io?s volcanoes (specially this),Huyghens landing site and similar addons.I have a slightest clue why.Maybe I can try another driver...
If it was the PSU,I would have severe lag in ALL games and simulators. :?

Would it improve the situation by running dual 8800 GTX cards in SLI mode? Can this even be done with Celestia with any benefit?

danielj,

I haven't tried the Io volcanoes so I can't comment on how thy tax Celestia and a graphics card. But if using the add-on makes the card perform badly it a simple no brainer. Remove or shut off the add-on. Just because an add-on has been made doesn't mean you have to use, no matter how cool it looks. If it is impacting your overall pleasure and performance with Celestia turn it off and move on. If you or anyone else can't seem to replicate your problem or fix it than there really there is no fix.

You do have a habit of fixating on something like this and whipping it to death. Just come to the realization that at this time there may be no way to get it work for you.

Sorry if I sound a little heavy handed but sometimes you just to come to terms that you can't use something even if you want. It s called life. Until someone comes up with a better answer just don't use it. Period.

Or, you could also remove some of the "active" geysers on Io. You do not have to have all of them working you know.

Well,it?s not a Celestia related problem. It?s an addon specific problem...I tested Mars 3d from cartrite and I can get up to 35 fps when I disabled atmosphere and clouds. When I enable atmosphere,I get around 28 fps. When I enable also clouds, the frame rate drops to around 20 fps.But with the 7600 GT,the maximum frame rate was 22 or 23 fps. Also, the 7600 GT perfomance was dependable of the rendering pass.I could get more than 22 fps in Basic mode, but 17 fps or below in Open GL 2.0.Now the renderin pass doesn?t matter. The frame rate is between 32 and 35 fps, whatever it is...

danielj,

Does the 8800GS have DDR2 or DDR3. Your 7600 GT should have DDR3 memory. If your 8800GS has only DDR2 memory this would be why you are seeing some differences in the rendering. DDR2 memory just doesn't have the speed and the better memory bandwidth of DDR3. There is always the possibility that the 8800GS also has a hardware problem. Who is the cards manufacturer. Brand does make a difference.

Both of video cards are XFX,and the 8800 GS is DDR3.
There isn?t ANY 8800 GS DDR2!

Well XFX has come a long way from there as PINE. But back a couple of years ago they made horrible video cards under the PINE name. I myself being stung by these bad cards I just can't bring myself to trust them enough to buy one of there cards today. There old cards were plagued by running slower than the exact same card from e-VGA or PNY. They ran hotter, and they for some reason also locked their firmware so you couldn't do any tweaking of the bios to try and adjust things. All in all they were down right horrible. Of course they have changed and made a turn arround and make some off the best cards now. Of course they are only rated #3 when it comes to Nvidia based cards. The #1 is e-VGA and #2 is PNY. I Think Asus falls in at #4 or 5.

So you might consider that the card may have a manufacturing glitch. If it does, use your exchange rights or RMA it back and ask for a replacement.

I CAN?T DO THAT.I didn?t buy it from a store,I buy from a particular and don?t have the tax note. But I said that my perfomance in 3dMars was reasonable, almost good.Maybe the Io?s volcanoes is a problem because of the point sprites rendering. What I can say is when I get near the volcanoes, the perfomance degradade...
Unless you are trying to say me that the perfomance of the 8800 GS should be the TRIPLE of 7600 GT...

Well maybe not triple but there should be a substantial performance benefit over the 7600GT.

For some games and 3D Marks,I have a substantial gain, aproaching 2 times in many cases. As I said before, one example was Tomb Raider Legend demo with next gen content activated;though it?s a game from 2006,it is almost as heavy as Oblivion and maybe more.In the case of this game, the gain is more than the triple. The problem is 3d addons on Celestia.Even the Rassilon?s Mythica, the boost of perfomance wasn?t the expected.Maybe it?s the small increase in bandwidht from 21.9 GB/s to 32.91 GB/s the culprit!
