I was messing around with a spice addon for Deep Impact and noticed this bug.
I compiled this with r4250 using the QT4 code and used the gcc 4.1.2 compiler.
It happens with the KDE version too.
This image shows the earth and the tail from Temple1.
This image shows the comet in front of the earth even though it is far away and should still be behind the earth.

cartrite,
It would help a lot if you included a Cel URL for the failing viewpoint.
Personally, I simply don't have the time to try to find it.

This file, comet-bug.zip should contain everything you need to get there.
This bug was also in the Windows SVN build r4250.

I'm not sure what is meant in the next post.
The folder goes in extras. Open the html and click on the link if you are using Windows. Copy the cel-url and Paste in Goto url if in Linux KDE.

Re: r4250 bug comet tails
I just built the release candidate for 1.5.1 and noticed this slight problem. I built the KDE UI and opened the Celestial Browser and was touring the Solar System when I decided to goto Hale Bopp. This says it is 26 AU from the Sun and when you approach it it has a tail. Is this right?

Re: r4250 bug comet tails
That's not the tail, that's the coma.
The tail is no longer drawn when comets are more than about 5AU from the Sun.
Actually it's a defect, not a bug: there's no consensus as to when the coma should no longer be drawn.

Re: r4250 bug comet tails
OK Then I haven't found any problems with the 1.5.1 tar that Pat created in the email at source forge.

Re: r4250 bug comet tails
At the risk of starting another heated debate, couldn't we simply have the coma and the tail react together?
If I may, I can't easily see the difference between the two anyway when I'm viewing a comet in Celestia.
Or, maybe another approach would work.
Perhaps the rendering view options could contain a check box for comas as well as tails?
Just a thought.
Thanks, Bob
