The size of the base installation is a factor whether people realize it or not. Since I'm using a very fast cable connection, I really don't mind downloading large files. I would like to point out, though, that when people are downloading the latest releases of Celestia from Shatters Net, the forum's performance slows to a crawl. Hasn't anyone else noticed this?

I would opt for optional language pack downloads if it's all the same to others here. Anything you can do to reduce the size of the entire package would be better for the entire community would it not?

At the risk of getting yelled at again, I would also point out that the ML could also host these language packs.
Sorry, but I have only heard rumors of what happened while I was away, so I'm just offering the suggestion.

If this suggestion is offensive, please believe me, it is NOT meant to be.

Thanks, Bob

No offense taken, Bob. But for something like language packs that are really part of the core program, we'd probably just use SourceForge for storage. The official Celestia releases aren't actually stored on shatters.net; I think it's the increased forum activity around release time that slows down the forums.

I don't see a big problem with the size of the Celestia package doubling since 2003. Disk storage and network speeds have more than kept pace with this growth. For the benefit of dial-up users, we could split the Chinese and Japanese fonts (the Cyrillic glyph sets are much smaller) into a separate language package. I'm ok with this, but someone would have to commit to maintaining this package, as I simply don't have time to do it.

Post 1.5.1, we could look into generating the glyph sets at run time instead of supplying font textures in the Celestia package. In addition to reducing the package size, this would allow users to pick whatever fonts they wanted from the set installed on their computers.

Don't take me wrong, but is it difficult or impossible to make galaxies look like real and in 3-d
Something like that.

Exactly what do you mean?

Celestia (starting with v1.4.0) already shows galaxies in 3D and with the correct orientation.
Of course, it does use generic models for the different types of galaxies.. Providing a detailed model for each individual galaxy would really bloat the program!

Please remember that the colorful pictures that you are probably used to seeing use unrealistic color maps to bring out details of interest to astronomers. Celestia doesn't do that. However, there are a few colorful models on the MotherLode.

Hello Chris, sorry for troubling you, but I have just a requestabout the cel script commands additions, made by m3ntol and regarding lines and labels colors for all the objects shown in celestia, and the possibility to show/hide single or groups of constellations, here:
http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12085&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=30
He sent you the code, but I cannot see it in the last Celestia CVS changes lists.
Did I miss it somewhere?
Or will it be inserted in 1.5.1 final or later?
Thank you for your time.
BTW, anyone has news about m3ntol?

We know such pictures, of course. How about estimating on the back of an envelope how long it would take the development team to render 10000 or more galaxies in such detail? ;-) . (Let alone that it would bring the CPU to a halt).

The only practical way of filling the Celestia Universe with a significant number of deep space objects is to let the computer do practically all the work. That's what Celestia's present approach is about. Celestia's 10000+ galaxies get all the required rendering data from one of the most accurate scientific galaxy catalogues. They are located at the right place, they have the right Hubble type, shape, coloration, brightness AND orientation in 3d space.

Moreover, we have agreed to model Celestia's Universe essentially as the naked eye would see it. Since the eye cannot accumulate photons like a CCD, one would never see the galaxies with such vivid colors as visible on the image you displayed. Every amateur astronomer owning a sizable telescope will confirm that galaxies look pretty colorless to the eye.

Andrea,

The cel commands to turn on constellations individually and set their colors was included in Celestia (revision 4156, Feb. 29.) Vincent added the corresponding functions to celx. This will appear in 1.6.0; 1.5.1 has no new features, just translation updates and bug fixes.

The code to set line colors and label colors is not yet included.

When checking the logs, make sure you're looking at the SVN repository, not CVS: Celestia switched from CVS to SVN after 1.5.0 was released.

Chris:

I don't know if my system is the problem, but when I installed 1.5.1r3 via your Windows installer, it failed to associate .celx files with Celestia, even though there is a check box in the installation menu to do so. .cel files associated fine. Could you check this out please?

Thanks
Frank
