Strange Bug

Post #1by BobHegwood » 08.04.2008, 14:37

Hey there...

I've encountered a very strange bug on my system here.
Let's see if I can explain it properly...

If I modify my solarsys.ssc file to use John Van Vliet's 4K Mercury map texture (Mercury.png) I have no problems using the following code in my solarsys.ssc file:
Texture "Mercury.png"

However, if I add the following NormalMap definition to the solarsys.ssc file and try to use Celestia at all, it goes bananas.
NormalMap "MercuryNormal.png"

By "bananas" I mean that Celestia - when executed - starts the program, but does NOT execute the start.cel file like it normally does. In fact, what happens is that I end up looking a the Sun, but with Ceres listed as the planet which is selected by pressing the number 1. In fact, there are NO planets listed in the Solar System Browser. All I see are asteroids.

When I comment out the NormalMap definition listed above, Celestia again works normally.

Anyone encountered this before?

Thanks, Bob

Hey thanks for the reply.

I'm fairly certain that I didn't do this, but I'll try again just to make certain.

Well I'll be damned...

I guess I DID do this... Thanks a lot, Derek. I guess my mind is going faster than I thought it was.

This is a very interesting quirk though. Amazed at the the damage one single quotation mark can cause.
Thanks again, Brain-Dead Bob

Know when i mess it up i look to see where the mistake starts , what is listed in the solar system nav tab . If i was working on Io then is Saturn listed

Yeah, well I thought that I had seen it all, but obviously I haven't.

You'd think that this kind of error might cause a crash or something, but Celestia happily continued running as if nothing was wrong.
I actually changed out the main program (celestia.exe) because I thought that I had really screwed something up badly.

Amazing error... Must be time to change my keyboard batteries again.

Thanks a lot, Brain-Dead

I guess this is why our beloved developers encourage us users to create separate ssc files and use the modify command instead of modifying solarsys.ssc ;)

Could very well be, but then you arrive at a place where you have such a mess of extras stuff that the whole of Celestia becomes unmanageable.

I don't mind screwing things up occasionally in order to learn something.
