danielj,
It looks like you are looking for the wrong thing here. Try looking at hubble's dark side when it is illuminated by the earth's day side.
Using HDR will almost remove all the planet shine. HDR is something different. It tries to approximate the human eye by limiting the stars that are visible when a bright light source is in view. Try looking at the earth when it is eclipsing the sun. See here.viewtopic.php?p=101880#p101880

I found the HST being illuminated by Earth?s light side, but IT ISN?T THE PLANETSHINE,since when I hit Ctrl+X,nothing changes.Take a look at the picture:

Planet shine works fine for me. You may want to keep this in mind.

Daniel,

here are the few obvious keypresses that you have to do to see the nice planetshine:
  • start a fresh Celestia
  • type 'Hubble' <return> into the command line
  • type G
  • type 'Sun' <return> into the command line
  • type SHIFT + C which centers the sun behind Hubble with the Earth in your BACK!
  • do some final adjustments to see the Sun behind Hubble like on cartrite's image. Then you see the pale illumination of Hubble by Earth. Since the Sun is located behind Hubble, the light is surely NOT from the Sun. ;-)
  • toggle SHIFT+* to look behind you and you will see the bluish Earth that illuminates Hubble...

All I ask you is NOT to forget accidentally one of the steps...

I can see only when I put Ambient Light to Medium. But,then,it?s the ambiente light that is illuminating HST,not the Earth, itself.

Daniel,

WHERE is your Sun and where is the Earth? I don't see the Sun looking towards the observer from behind Hubble in your image! I wrote, you should make the image look like that of 'cartrite'. Also what did you see when hitting SHIFT+* ??? Since ambient light has NOTHING to do with planetshine, put it to ZERO.

Daniel,

Here is a Cel url to take you to a viewpoint where the Hubble telescope is illuminated by the Earth's planetshine:

cel://Follow/Sol:Earth:Hubble/2008-04-0 ... 2048&ver=2

Below is what it looks like on my system. Note that the Sun is marked and in the field of view. The Earth is behind the viewpoint. The Earthshine is shown by all Render paths. Of course, the scene from this particular viewpoint is unrealistic since the light from the Sun would be blindingly bright, which would make the Earthshine invisible.

The cel url is linked to Celestia 1.5.1 RC2 and as you can see,Planetshine is NOT working in Celestia 1.5.1

That's because Planetshine is not part of Celestia 1.5.1 RC2. Planetshine is part of Celestia 1.6.beta/svn.
