It looks OK to me. The lines don't join exactly the stars that I'm used to seeing connected, but different star maps have different conventions.

According to the log on SourceForge, Fridger did a major overhaul of asterisms.dat some 8 months ago. I do think it would have been appropriate to include a mention of what maps he used as a source for the figures.

None specifically. Just 11 years of being associated with XEphem development;-) etc. I have discussed my other sources of inspiration in detail in this Forum (before you came in I think, have a look via search).
I have also written Perl scripts that allow to convert asterisms that are in the public domain to Celestia format. All this should be hidden somewhere in the old mail.

Alternate set

Post #4by Matt McIrvin » 05.02.2003, 06:51

If you don't care for Fridger's constellation diagrams, you might try an alternate set that I drew around the same time, unaware that Fridger had just done the same thing. You can find it on Bruckner's add-ons site.

Some of mine are very similar to Fridger's, but others are very different. There are no standard constellation diagrams, so there's some allowance for taste. Having seen Fridger's diagrams, I think they're better than mine on the whole, but the points of great variation are interesting.

I didn't follow any particular published star map either, but (at least for constellations visible from my latitude) I drew the lines that I normally imagine when I look up at the stars, which I had probably absorbed from a variety of sources in my youth and then modified by whim. The hardest part was figuring out how to make sense of all those small, dim Lacaille constellations in the southern hemisphere.

I took some liberties for the sake of traditional asterisms familiar to me; for instance, I drew in the Great Square of Pegasus even though one of the corners is not actually in Pegasus.

GUI option for choosing constellation diagrams

Hi!

Is it possible to add GUI option for choosing between different constellation diagrams? This option can solve preference problem :-)

Best regards

You might also try a more recent version of Celestia than 1.2.5 -- the current version is 1.3.1.
