SnowBall Earth.

It's happened numerous times in Earth's geological history, the most recent "snowball earth" event ending 750 million years ago. No wonder why we weren't here sooner. ;)

I remember seeing something on the Science Channel about the earliest forms of life. It said that was what killed off most of the mollusks and arthropods that were dominant at the time, and the vertebrates managed to survive and take advantage of the mass extinction by dominating the Earth (mainly the land). It was a lucky break for us!
