Amazing ADSL tuning ...

Hi all,

Purgatory seems the only adequate place for this note.

During the last 2 evenings, I managed to dramatically improve the download speed with my new 3000 Kbit/sec ADSL line. Such tweakings are particularly effective with high-speed and high latency transfers.

latency <=> round trip ping time, typically 50 -250 [ms], depending on the distance and the number of hops to the server.

I did the optimizations both for my XP laptop and my Linux machines that are all part of my switched & routed intranet.

So if anyone is interested what can be done, let me know. I am talking about factors of two for my ADSL 3000 line. In case of my superfast Gigabit office LAN I gained a speed factor of about 10!!

I am afraid with 512 Kbits/sec the effect of tuning is rather minor...

If you have Windows you should download the small tool 'DrTCP' and make sure that your TCP/IP receive window size is at least 32K which is the default with Windows XP. But you forgot to tell me your OS. Things are strongly OS dependent, however...
