Okay, uh... The Borg, here's a question:

Why should we waste shatters.net resources discussing fanboy Star Trek trivia when these topics would be much more at home on a forum dedicated to the topic?
Here for example.

I honestly don't see how "The Borg Collective" relates to Celestia or astronomy in general. Regardless of how clever (or not) an alias it may (or not) be.

Individuals, this thread is founded with the sole purpose only: so that we would not need to discuss some matters in "ordinary" threads. If you have monitored recent threads, you would notice lots of >off topic< discussions about the Borg and/or something related. Therefore, we do not want to "waste" space in other threads but when someone asks something, we could redirect him here. It would result in less >off topic< discussions that happened recently.

If your so obsessed on becoming something from a TV show then go
to the forum at http://www.trekuniversenetwork.com people will gladly read anything you have to say over there.I like Star Trek I've been watching it for years, I like the Borg I like the Romulans but I don't post things like Join the Romulan star empire or crumble under our power. In the Star trek area you can post all you want about being a borg and it won't even be off topic. Just post over there at http://www.trekuniversenetwork.com in the star trek section and once you put your points in the bank you'll buy yourself a borg cube. If you want I can even log on to my account (because I used to post there) and give you 5000 points to start you off.

Yes, I've noticed quite a few off topic posts of late. My point is that this thread is just as off topic and does not belong in any of the Celestia forums. If you don't have anything relevant to talk about, just don't post.

To individual designated as "abiogenesis"

Next time, before adding your comment, read the posts.
If you have nothing to add here then do not post in this thread.

There is someone who will find this thread usefull, for example, an individual asked "Who is the BORG anyway?". Instead of answering in that thread, we redirect it to this one which would not be off topic of the thread.

Hey Borgies,

could you please be so kind and compute your average age for me??

In case you do not know how this is done:

N= number of Borgies in collective

A_1= age of Borgie 1
A_1 = age of Borgie 2
...
A_N = age of Borgie N

Then what I want to know is
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
<A> = (A_1 + A_2 + ... + A_N)/N
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Please let me know your result. I then shall phone the Kindergarden and ask them to get into contact with you...

No, I'm sorry, but it is off topic. Until very recently the question of "Who is The Borg" would not have even been asked in this forum. It is irrelevant to the subjects associated with Celestia. I guarantee that this question would be much better received on either of the boards dedicated to Star Trek fandom listed above. The fact that you had to explicitly ask the board's administrator not to delete the thread is witness to its irrelevance.

The signal-to-noise ratio of these forums has dropped dramatically recently and I find it frustrating. For example, there is a thread in the Physics/Astronomy forum with an innocuous title suggesting discussion of one of the inner planets. It has about 15 posts. Only four of those posts have anything to do with the planet in question. I used to come here for intriguing and enlightening discussions of a scientific nature but, of late, it is tending toward the sort of babble that is all to common in the rest of the internet.

There are places for these types of discussions. This forum is not one of them. Now, I'm not trying to scare you off the board. Some of your individual contributions have been valuable, particularly your efforts in creating add-ons. Just try to keep things Celestia-related (or Physics/Astronomy as appropriate).

The Collective is approximately 3000 Earth years old.
Once individual is assimilated into Collective, it's life expectancy becomes irrelevant: by implanting them with NanoProbes, Implants and thus replacing their biological organs and functions, the Drones gain a great Regenerational possibilities resulting in them being ageless.
Every Second, new individuals are assimilated and transformed into drones. If a drone is deactivated by any reason, it's implants are removed to be enhanced and used in new assimilations.

Current number of drones inside the Collective:

- 6.682.958.257
(...)
- 6.682.958.264

Mr. Collective,

If reality does not meet your needs, you are welcome to abstain. I can't imagine how this fictitious delusion of yours affects your "real" life, but it must be frightening.

Celestia is a program that attempts to simulate, to the best of our knowledge, the real world. Now, this may be a concept you are not familiar with but, trust me, that is the program's purpose.

As the program was introduced to more people, some of them saw the potential to make very beautiful, fictitious creations using the technology. Some of their creations are even Star Trek related. These people, however, do not pretend that what they create is real. They do not expect the rest of the users of the forum to submit to any personal fantasy they may have.

Although it was sarcastic, Fridger asked you a simple question. A question with a real answer. Personally, I don't care how old you are. It is very disturbing to see a person of any age so attached to a fictional identity. It cannot be healty and it severly reduces your ability to contribute to any meaningful discussions in the Celestia forums.

I am very much worried, too, about the forum discussion level, just as you are! I feel, since a few days some sort of phase transition has been going on here...Teenagers and Borgies have been taking over!

I have also been exchanging PM's about this recent trend with a few friends...

HELP!

Fridger:

I feel your pain. I remember, quite a while ago, a discussion about the merits of popularizing Celestia. If I recall correctly, you were against the idea for reasons which are now clear to me. At the time, I didn't comment but I remember thinking that you were being perhaps a bit elitist. Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my judgement...

Until Celestia, I wasn't much of a participant in internet message boards. Since, however, I have found a handful that I read. I am shocked at how quickly they all degrade into inane gibberish. I was hoping that this last bastion of rational discussion would avoid the same fate but, alas, it was not to be. :cry:

Any suggestions about how we can combat this plague?

You get banned from posting for a month, if you post more than 2 really off topic things, within 2 weeks. You get a warning after your second post...?

Or would that actually be practical/too severe...?

A possible part of the solution, Fridger and abiogenesis, is not to enter into dialogue with posts/posters you consider irrelevant. Attention of any kind is a reward of sorts, and just encourages further posts.

Amazing! Of course, I am continuously thinking about my prediction almost a year back, when most of the people concerned were not yet around. Good you do remember, since that prediction really seems to be "right on the nose" as we say. At the time, a number of people tried to give me a hard time for that;-)

Since a number of clever people are presently thinking about solutions, I am optimistic;-)

Of course, you are right and I am partly guilty. In fact I wrote Chris a little while ago that I shall try keeping "my mouth" shut (it was my own suggestion, though) ... Well,...My problem is that I always felt this entertaining mixture of intellectual and trivial talking irresistible;-), notably after a hard day with this famous bottle of German beer next to me...

mea culpa
